Job summary

The postholder is responsible for treating and managing patients in respect of their acute and continuing nursing needs, and for supporting the lead nurse in supervision of the nursing team and infection control requirements.

Main duties of the job

The postholder is responsible for the full range of practice nursing duties including chronic disease management, NHS Healthchecks, cervical smears, wound care and vaccinations, as well as nursing duties relating to infection control and premises, equipment and stock management

About us

We are a busy, friendly GP training practice in Barnes, South West London. We are responsible for 13,700 patients and our list continues to grow. Our current nursing team includes a lead nurse, nursing associates, trainee nursing associate, health care assistant and GP assistant. The successful applicant will support the lead nurse in day to day supervision of the team as well as delivering appropriate high quality patient care.

  • Routine injections
  • Health checks, screening and education
  • Height/weight monitoring
  • BP monitoring
  • Phlebotomy
  • Urinalysis
  • Spirometry
  • General health advice, including dietary advice
  • Health surveillance
  • Wound care and dressings
  • Contraception
  • Minor injuries
  • Removal of sutures/clips
  • Provide general and specific health screening for practice patients in accordance with practice guidelines and protocols, with referral to other members of the primary and secondary healthcare team as required.
  • Support the lead nurse in the organisation, coordination and the provision of nursing services for the practice, including the delegation of duties to, and supervision of, other members of the nursing team as appropriate.

The postholder will participate in the training programme implemented by the practice as part of their employment, including participation in an annual performance review, maintaining a record of their own personal and/or professional development, taking responsibility for their own development and demonstrating skills and activities to others.

Knowledge and skills

Essential

  • Registered Nurse with current NMC and active PIN.
  • Post registration study in topics relevant to general practice.
  • Excellent literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Demonstrable understanding of the needs of the patient and role of a Practice Nurse.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients and colleagues, both in person and via telephone.
  • Good working IT skills.

Desirable

  • - Experience of working in primary care in a GP practice.
