Job summary

Temporary fixed term contract ideally 12 months initially (April - March 2026). To cover maternity leave period.

Between 1-3 days, there is flexibility in both working days and how hours are spread over week. Please indicate in your application what days and hours would be your preference.

We are looking for an experienced practice nurse who will be able to hit the ground running with the right support.

We are a friendly team and really care about giving a high level of service & support to our patients.

This may suit someone who wants to change their role with no long term commitment necessary, or fit alongside an existing role. We are open to ideas/ negotiation.

Main duties of the job

Holistic approach to wound management in line with current evidence based guidelines.

Offer a holistic approach to NHS travel health by providing comprehensive advice

Offer advice about childhood and adult vaccinations and ensure vaccines are administered under patient group directions.

Offer health promotion programmes by providing a holistic assessment and lifestyle advice on diet, alcohol intake and exercise.

Asthma, Peak Flow Readings, Spirometry

Hypertension management

Requesting pathology tests, for example urine culture, swabs.

Perform a holistic assessment of patients attending for cervical cytology smear tests.

Perform venepuncture according to local guidelines

Suture removal.

Ensure infection control guidelines are maintained.

Ability to monitor and manage maintenance of stock and equipment to include refrigeration and emergency equipment.

Job responsibilities

Chronic disease management

To ensure the full delivery of appropriate chronic disease management

including diabetes (not essential), asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and cardiovascular illness

Vaccinations and immunisations

To provide an adult and childhood immunisation service. To ensure safe storage, rotation and disposal of vaccines. Develop and work to patient group directives

Travel health service -To offer an holistic approach to NHS travel health

Family planning and women's health -To provide an holistic family planning and sexual health service to patients

To provide an emergency post coital service through the provision of medication under a patient group directive

Mental health-To provide an opportunity for patients to share emotional and psychological issues within a consultation

Infection control-To apply infection control measures within the practice

Wound management -To provide complex wound management including Doppler assessment

Support the individual preparation, management and after care of patients having minor surgery on the premises

Minor illness -To assess and provide treatment to patients who have direct access to the practice nurse according to practice protocols

Health Promotion -To ensure that the public health potential of a patient consultation is fulfilled

Awareness of national standards of infection control and cleanliness and regulatory / contractual / professional requirements, and good practice guidelines

Responsible for the correct and safe management of the specimens process, including collection, labelling, handling, use of correct and clean containers, storage and transport arrangements

Management and maintenance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the practice including provision, ordering, availability and ongoing correct usage by staff

Using appropriate infection control procedures, maintaining work areas in a tidy, clean and sterile, and safe way, free from hazards. Initiation of remedial / corrective action where needed or escalation to responsible management

Actively identifying, reporting, and correction of health and safety hazards and infection hazards immediately when recognised

Keeping own work areas and general / patient areas generally clean, sterile, identifying issues and hazards / risks in relation to other work areas within the business, and assuming responsibility in the maintenance of general standards of cleanliness across the business in consultation (where appropriate) with other sector managers

Waste management including collection, handling, segregation, container management, storage and collection

Maintenance of sterile environments

Demonstrate due regard for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
