Job summary

Ardingly Court GP Surgery is seeking a Health Care Assistant (HCA) to join our friendly team.

We are looking for someone who enjoys working in a busy environment and has a love of patient care.

The ideal candidate would have experience of working in a GP practice in a HCA role.

However, as a minimum you MUST have practical experience of delivering phlebotomy services* & be willing to learn the other elements of the role.(*Please do not apply if you do not have this experience)

Main duties of the job

Elements of the role expected to deliver (with training); blood pressure checks, NHS health checks, Urinalysis, Smoking Cessation, restocking of rooms, diabetes foot assessments, ECG measurement assisting with Infection Control processes and audits.

  • The post is 30 hours per week.
  • Ideally hours would be 8:00 -16:00 (although hours could be adapted if still met surgery needs).
  • We would accept applications for part time hours especially if someone with experience in a similar role wished to take on some additional hours.
  • Pay scale dependent on experience but in the range of £10.18 - £11.50 per hour.
  • If someone has more than 1 years experience working in a GP surgery in a HCA role and is able to deliver the majority of the personal specification on starting the hourly rate may be able to be negotiated further than £11.50 - rate dependant on experience and competencies evidenced.

About us

We are a close knit team of approximately 21 staff (5 GPs, 2 nurses, 2 HCAs) and a number of administrative support staff.

We seek to provide a high level of GP health services & serve approximately 6500 patients.

Centrally located in Kemptown we are walking distance from Brighton train station and the St James Street bus stop.

Job responsibilities

RESPONSIBLE TO

Practice Manager Clinically to the Senior Nurse.

MAIN PURPOSE

To assist the medical personnel with the care of patients. This will include treatment, preventative care, screening and patient education. The post will also include some administrative duties.

GENERAL

As part of the nursing team the HCA will be employed to undertake nursing and administrative duties as deemed suitable by the Partners. Full training will be given prior to any patient contact. The HCA will always work along side another member of the nursing team and there will always be a doctor available to refer to. The role involves the use of the computer and keyboard skills along with the ability to organise and prioritise a varied workload are necessary.

To maintain a safe and effective level of practice and to bring any deficits in training to the attention of the nurse manager so these can be addressed.

They will be required to act in a professional manner at all times and adhere to practice policies, protocols and guidelines.

1. Training

Training will initially be provided in house. Training requirements will be monitored by yearly appraisal. Personal development will be encouraged and supported by the practice. Its the individuals responsibility to remain up to date with recent developments.

2. Accountability

Although accountable to the partners of the practice through the practice manager as an employee, they are ultimately responsible for their own practice and must ensure that limitations are always acknowledged. Full training will be provided for any clinical procedures.

3. Administration

All records need to be kept clearly and contemporaneously on the computer.

4. Meetings

It will be necessary to attend various Practice meetings as requested. The only reason for not attending will be annual, study or sick leave.

5. Liaison

As well as the nursing team, the nursing assistant will work closely with reception staff and will be expected to communicate and liaise with the all other members of the Practice team.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Nursing

  • BP monitoring
  • Urinalysis
  • ECG measurement
  • Phlebotomy
  • Weight monitoring
  • Chaperone patients as necessary
  • Smoking cessation clinics
  • Injections B12, flu etc
  • Provide lifestyle advice to patients making any necessary referrals within the Practice
  • Foot assessments
  • Health Promotion
  • Learning disability reviews
  • Restocking/maintenance of equipment
  • Restocking of clinical areas and consulting rooms

2. Administration and professional responsibilities

Participate in the administrative and professional responsibilities of the practice team

  • Ensure accurate and legible notes of all consultations and treatments are recorded in the patients notes
  • Ensure the clinical computer system is kept up to date with accurate details recorded
  • Ensure accurate completion of all necessary documentation associated with patient health care and registration with the practice
  • Ensure collection and maintenance of statistical information required for regular and ad hoc reports
  • Attend and participate in practice meetings as require.
  • Restocking and maintenance of clinical areas and consulting rooms
  • To assist in seasonal and special projects as requested e.g. flu campaign

  • Ordering and rotation of CSSD equipment.
  • Cleaning and sterilisation of equipment and associated record keeping.
  • Ordering of pathology stores equipment

3. Any other delegated duties considered appropriate to the post

  • Support Infection Control processes
