Job summary

Jorvik Gillygate Practice is looking to expand our team we are looking for a suitably qualified phlebotomist to join us.

Working under the direct supervision of the senior practice nurse and GP Partners strictly in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols, the healthcare assistant will assist the practice clinical team in the provision and delivery of prescribed programmes of patient care.

We are looking for a Phlebotomist on a permanent contract, number of hours to be confirmed.

The Phlebotomist will support the practice nursing and administrative teams in the delivery of clinical and administrative services, working as part of the practice multi-disciplinary team, delivering care within their scope of practice to the entitled patient population.

The Phlebotomist will deliver and assist clinical staff in the provision of treatment, preventative care, health promotion and patient education whilst also supporting the administrative team on an as-required basis.

Main duties of the job

The post holder works under direct supervision of the lead practice nurse and undertake tasks and duties delegated by the practice lead nurse or a suitably qualified regulated professional. They will work collaboratively with the general practice team to meet the needs of the patients, following policy and procedures.

  • Collection of samples(s) of blood in accordance with training and procedures
  • Ensuring samples are stored in appropriate containers
  • Accurate, legible labelling of all samples to confirm patient identity
  • Checking patient identification against GP/nurse request and confirming with patient whenever possible
  • Recording collection of blood sample in patient record in accordance with practice procedure
  • Ensuring that samples are dispatched to the appropriate laboratories in a timely fashion
  • Ensuring that anomalies are reported to a senior member of staff
  • Notifying the GP/nurse of any significant patient issues
  • Liaising with and assisting members of the administrative team

Clinically they must also know the limits of their own capabilities and seek direction from a Practice nurse, or Managing Partner. Working under the supervision of practice nursing team and strictly in accordance with specific practice or national guidelines and protocols, the Phlebotomist will be responsible for performing venepuncture to obtain blood samples from patients only as the result of a direct referral from a GP, Nurse practitioner or annual review recall.

  • To collect blood samples safely with due respect to the dignity of patients, and the needs of other clinical services.
  • To ensure blood samples are collected in appropriate containers, labelled correctly, and prepared and dispatched to relevant laboratory sections in a timely and correct manner.
  • To contribute to the provision of an efficient, high-quality service and ensure that proficiency and competence and personal and professional standards of that group are maintained.
