Job summary

We are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic Phlebotomist to join our forward thinking and friendly nursing team. The successful applicant will be expected to work across all four of our sites but will be predominately based at our Chaddesden and Borrowash surgeries.

The vacancy is for up to 18 hours a week working bewteen the hours of 8am and 3pm

Main duties of the job

Working under the direction of the lead nurse and as part of the practice multidisciplinary team, the post holder will be responsible for performing venepuncture, as requested by the clinical team, to the entitled patient population. The successful candidate will hold a relevant phlebotomy qualification and be prepared to undertake further training or updates when needed, proof of training is required and experience is essential (Min 12 months). In addition, the Phlebotomist will be expected to support the nursing team on an as required basis such as performing blood pressure readings and urine dipstick testing.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The following are the core responsibilities of the Phlebotomist. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:

a. Obtaining patient consent for the collection of a blood sample

b. Performing venepuncture in accordance with practice protocols

c. Maintaining accurate patient records on System One

d. The correct labelling, packaging and storing of samples

e. Effective use of the specimen log, resolving any discrepancies

f. Ensuring samples are sent to the laboratory in a timely manner

g. Maintaining an effective liaison with the laboratory staff at University Hospitals Derby and Burton

h. Working collaboratively with the nursing team, seeking guidance when necessary for patient related matters

Ensuring clinical rooms are fully stocked and clinical waste is disposed of in accordance to Infection Control Policies.

In addition to the primary responsibilities, the Phlebotomist may be requested to:

a. Participate in practice audit as directed by the audit lead

b. Participate in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care

c. Support and participate in shared learning within the practice

d. Complete opening and closing procedures in accordance with the duty rota

Qualifications

Essential

  • You will hold a relevant phlebotomy qualification and be prepared to undertake further training or updates when needed (proof of training is required).
  • Good standard of general education

  • Experience of working in Primary Care
  • Knowledge of System One

Experience

  • Trained and experienced Phlebotomist a minimum of 12 months experience is required - proof of training required
  • Able to deliver phlebotomy services and care to the practice population
  • Able to work collaboratively with the general practice team to meet the needs of patients, supporting the delivery of policy and procedures
  • Experience of facilitating effective communication between patients, members the primary health care team, secondary care and other associated healthcare agencies
  • Ability to work independently as part of a large team
  • Ability to adapt to service needs whilst working in a busy environment
  • Must be able to work within the rules governing patient confidentiality
  • To be aware of the limitations within the Health Care Assistant role
