Job purpose/summary:
We would like to welcome an experienced and fully qualified General Practice Nurse (Registered General Nurse) to join our nursing team at Health and Beyond. We are a large organisation with a friendly team consisting of GPs, Specialist Diabetes and Respiratory Nurses, General Practice Nurses, Nurse Associates, General Practice Assistants, Health Care Assistants, Advanced Clinical/ Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Pharmacists, Pharmacy Technicians, Care Co-ordinators, Health and Wellbeing Coaches, the clinical team are supported by a team of Senior Managers that include Service Leads, an HR Team, a Finance Team, Receptionists, Secretaries, BI Team, IT and Administration staff. We are also joined by GP trainees from Birmingham University. The large pro-active nursing team is well established and supportive.
The post we are recruiting to is *****per week on a permanent basis.
Experience in Chronic Disease Management would be an advantage but Childrens Immunisations, Cervical Screening, Travel Health, Wound Management and an understanding of QOF are essential and mandatory requirements for this role.
The successful candidate will have the ability to work independently as well as being a good team player. The ability to work under pressure is also essential.
As an EMIS Web organisation previous experience using this system would be desirable but not essential as full training would be given.
Job Responsibilities:
- Ensure clinical practice is safe and effective and remains within boundaries of competence, and to acknowledge limitations following the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and Scope of Professional Practice at all times.
- Advise patients on general health care with referral to other members of the primary and secondary health care team as necessary
Providing assessment, screening treatment services and health education advice:
- Chronic Disease Management/Review including Diabetes and Respiratory
- Cervical Cytology
- Dietary advice
- Blood pressure checks
- Urinalysis
- Health screening/NHS Health Checks
- Ear syringing
- Dressings
- ECG
- Phlebotomy
- Routine injections
- Contraception
- Minor injuries
- Travel Health advice and Vaccination
- Routine immunisations and vaccinations
- Removal of sutures / clips
- Baby immunisations
- Assisting with the fitting of IUCD / IUS
- First registration checks / health surveillance / general health advice
- Assisting with minor procedures in the treatment room
- Organise and coordinate the provision of nursing services for the practice to include the delegation of duties to other members of the practice nurse team as appropriate
- Provide general and specific health screenings to the practice patients (within agreed protocols) with referral to other members of the primary and secondary health care team as necessary
- Any other task/duty that the Lead Nurse allocates that is appropriate and is within your professional competencies.
Pathological specimens and investigatory procedures
- Undertake the collection of pathological specimens including intravenous blood samples, swabs etc. Perform investigatory procedures requested by the GPs
Administration and professional responsibilities
- Participate in the administrative and professional responsibilities of the practice team
- Ensure accurate and legible notes of all consultations and treatments are recorded in the patients notes
- Ensure the clinical computer system is kept up to date, with accurate details recorded and amended
- Ensure appropriate items of service claims are made accurately, reporting any problems to the practice administrator
- Ensure accurate completion of all necessary documentation associated with patient health care and registration with the practice
- Ensure collection and maintenance of statistical information required for regular and ad hoc reports and audit
- Attend and participate in practice and nurse meetings as required
- Restocking and maintenance of clinical areas and consulting rooms
Minor operations
- Management of the theatre and recovery suite for minor operations, including maintenance of equipment and stock, adequate staffing and ensuring appropriate items of service claims are made
- To assist the doctor to carry out minor operations as required.
- Report any problems to the practice manager
Supplies and equipment
- Maintenance of equipment and stock relating to patient care
Training and personal development
- Training requirements will be monitored by yearly appraisal and will be in accordance with practice requirements. Personal development will be encouraged and supported by the practice. It is the individuals responsibility to remain up to date with recent developments.
- Participate in the education and training of students of all disciplines and the introduction of all members of the practice staff where appropriate
- Develop and maintain an in house nurse-training programme reporting to the practice manager.
- Maintain continued education by attendance at courses and study days as deemed useful or necessary for professional development, ensuring training requirements are met for Revalidation with the NMC.
- If it is necessary to expand the role to include additional responsibilities, full training will be given.
- Develop and maintain a Personal Learning Plan
Liaison
- As well as the nursing team, there is a need to work closely with reception, office and dispensary staff to ensure the smooth running of the practice, reporting any problems encountered to the relevant person and ensuring everyone is aware of the different roles within the nursing team.
- There is also the need to establish and maintain good liaison with other surgeries and agencies, including secondary care
Personal/Professional Development:
The post-holder will participate in any training programme implemented by the practice as part of this employment, such training to include:
- Participation in an annual individual performance review, including taking responsibility for maintaining a record of own personal and/or professional development
- To always act within the NMC Code of Conduct and Scope of Professional Practice
- Taking responsibility for own development, learning and performance and demonstrating skills and activities to others who are undertaking similar work.
