Job responsibilities
Working in accordance with the UKCC Code of Conduct, the post-holder will lead and develop the practice of the Practice nursing team in the provision of assessment, treatment, screening, health education services and advice to patients.
The post-holder will develop, and ensure that the nursing team work with reference to, Practice agreed protocols and guidelines to provide nursing treatments to patients both independently and in participation with nurse colleagues and general practitioners.
The post-holder will have the required level of training and competence and will work within patient group directions where these are available. A nurse with prescribing qualifications will use them appropriately.
Management Responsibilities
- Enable the nursing team to work effectively to provide a high quality service to patients and to work effectively with other agencies.
- Enable the Practice nursing team to apply and improve clinical governance and risk management systems
- Contribute to the development and implementation of policies, standards and guidelines across the Practice nursing team
- Supervise staff performance and development
Clinical Responsibilities
- Identify, assess and diagnose patients with complex health needs across the Practice population
- Work with others to change policies to improve health and well-being and reduce inequalities
- Lead the implementation and evaluation of evidence-based practice to improve the services offered by the Practice nursing team

- Provide nursing treatments to patients in participation with general practitioners or independently to agreed protocols
- Provide general and specific health screenings to the Practice patients with referral to general practitioners as necessary.
- Advise patients on general health care and minor ailments with referral to GPs as necessary.
- Cytology
- Urinalysis
- ECGs
- Requesting pathology tests, for example urine culture, swabs
- Following agreed clinical protocols with referral to senior nurses or GPs as appropriate
- Maintaining and cleaning equipment used by the nurses and GPs
- Maintaining GP and Nurses rooms, stocking and rotating items as required
- Chaperoning and assisting patients who are being examined by another clinician.
- Maintain general tidiness and cleanliness of nurses and treatment rooms
- Stock maintenance and ordering
- At all times there will be a need to maintain accurate records
- Attend and participate in any Practice meetings when required.
- On occasion there may be a requirement to undertake home visits
- Any other delegated duties appropriate to the post

- In the performance of the duties outlined in this Job Description, the post-holder may have access to confidential information relating to patients and their carers, Practice staff and other healthcare workers. They may also have access to information relating to the Practice as a business organisation. All such information from any source is to be regarded as strictly confidential
- Information relating to patients, carers, colleagues, other healthcare workers or the business of the Practice may only be divulged to authorised persons in accordance with the Practice policies and procedures relating to confidentiality and the protection of personal and sensitive data.

Qualifications required
First level nurse, relevant nursing/health degree
Professional registration with the NMC - Nursing & Midwifery Council
