Job summary

We are looking for a friendly and motivated Medical Receptionist to join our supportive GP practice team in Gateshead town centre. This is a varied role where you will be the first point of contact for patients, providing a welcoming and professional service both at reception and over the telephone.

Up to 37.5 hours per week are available, with shifts between 8:30am and 6:30pm Monday to Friday. Part-time hours or job share will be considered for the right candidate.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will support the smooth running of the practice by providing reception and administrative support to the clinical team. Duties will include greeting patients, answering telephone calls, booking and managing appointments, processing repeat prescriptions and responding to patient enquiries.

You will also carry out general administrative tasks such as managing incoming correspondence, scanning and filing documents, and updating patient records in line with practice procedures.

About us

We are a friendly GP practice based in Gateshead town centre with approximately 8,350 patients. Our team includes 3 GP partners, 8 salaried GPs, nurses, healthcare assistants, pharmacists, social prescribing link workers, care coordinators and a dedicated administration and reception team.

We are also a teaching practice supporting doctors in training and medical students. Our reception and administration staff play a vital role in the day-to-day running of the practice and in providing a high standard of service to our patients.

The purpose of the role is to provide reception and administrative support to ensure the smooth day-to-day running of the practice. The post holder will act as the first point of contact for patients and visitors, providing a professional, friendly and efficient service both face-to-face and over the telephone.

The role involves assisting patients in accessing the appropriate services and supporting the wider practice team with a range of administrative duties.

Main duties and responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities of the role include, but are not limited to:

  • Greeting patients and visitors and directing them appropriately

  • Answering telephone calls and responding to patient enquiries

  • Booking and managing appointments within the practice system

  • Processing repeat prescription requests in line with practice procedures

  • Processing and distributing incoming and outgoing correspondence

  • Updating patient records and maintaining accurate data on the clinical system

  • Scanning, filing and managing documentation

  • Taking messages and passing on information to the appropriate team member

  • Supporting clinicians and the wider practice team with administrative tasks

  • Maintaining a tidy and welcoming reception and waiting area

Duties may be varied from time to time depending on practice needs, workload and staffing levels.
