Community Tobacco Dependency Specialist Advisor

The closing date is 07 November 2025

Job summary

An opportunity has arisen to pilot embedding treatment of tobacco dependency into the Targeted Lung Health Check (TLHC) Programme across Newcastle Gateshead. The TLHC programme targets people most at risk of lung cancer, inviting them to a unique screening opportunity if they have ever, or currently smoke, and are between 55-75 years old. Emerging evidence suggests that this is an ideal opportunity to systematically identity and treat tobacco dependency for those still using tobacco at the time of screening. The Community Tobacco Dependency Specialist Advisor (CTDSA) will work alongside the lead nurse to provide an enhanced treatment offer across Newcastle-Gateshead, with the aim of sharing learning across the whole North East and North Cumbria footprint.

Main duties of the job

The CTDSA role will include provision of tobacco dependency treatment, embedded within the TLHC programme, to a range of individuals. The specialist advisors will work with TLHC programme teams to identify people who smoke throughout the pathway and offer enhanced brief advice on smoking cessation. Advisors will triage the level of support required at the time of identification, and work with individuals to develop a personalised treatment plan. This may include gradual tobacco reduction, harm reduction or an abrupt quit attempt. Community Tobacco Dependency Specialist Advisors will work closely with the existing Newcastle and Gateshead Stop Smoking Services to ensure individuals that are suitable for routine support are referred to access this support.
