Job summary

We are seeking a trained and experienced Phlebotomist to join our friendly practice.

You will support the delivery of high quality primary care by providing safe, accurate and compassionate venepuncture services across our diverse patient population.

Being a team player who is approachable, dedicated and compassionate toward both patients and colleagues within the practice is essential for this busy role. The role is fast paced but rewarding. Working in collaboration as part of a supportive team, you will be confident in managing and prioritising your own workload.

Main duties of the job

Working under the supervision of the Lead Nurse/Practice Nurse and strictly in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols.

Blood Sample Collection - Perform venepuncture to collect blood samples from patients following clinical guidelines.

  • Patient Care & Comfort - Ensure patients feel at ease, addressing any concerns and managing anxious individuals professionally.
  • Sample Processing - Label, store, and prepare blood samples for transportation to the laboratory, ensuring accuracy and compliance with protocols.
  • Infection Control & Safety - Follow infection prevention procedures, including proper disposal of sharps and maintaining a clean working environment.
  • Record Keeping - Accurately document patient details, tests requested, and sample collection in the clinical system.
  • Stock Management - Maintain and replenish phlebotomy and clinical room supplies, ensuring all necessary equipment is available.
  • Team Collaboration - Work closely with GPs, nurses, and administrative staff to support patient care and practice efficiency.
  • Professional Development - Stay updated with best practices and attend training as required.

Skerne Medical Group is a rural practice registered with the Care Quality Commission. The practice provides services to around 17,000 patients from three locations: Harbinson House in Sedgefield, Carroll House in Trimdon Colliery and Beveridge House in Fishburn.

We area well-established training practice providing high standards of patient focused care. Our practice team consists of 7 GP Partners, 4 Salaried GPs and 4 Clinical Practitionerswho are supported by an extensive experienced nursing team along with a full complement of management and administrative staff who all play a part in striving to provide the best possible healthcarefor our patients.

Job responsibilities

The following are the core responsibilities of the Phlebotomist in delivering health services. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks. This will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:

Obtaining patient consent for the collection of a blood sample

Performing venepuncture in accordance with practice protocols

Maintaining accurate patient records on the clinical IT system and ensuring specimens are ready for onward transportation

The correct labelling, packaging and storing of samples

Effective use of the specimen log, resolving any discrepancies

Ensuring samples are sent to the laboratory in a timely manner

Maintaining effective liaison with the NHS Trust laboratory staff

Working collaboratively with the nursing team, seeking guidance when necessary for patient related matters

Being an integral part of the general practice team

Acting as a chaperone as required

Ensuring clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the organisations IPC Policy

Working within national and local protocols where these exist

Be aware of duties and responsibilities regarding current legislation and adhere to practice policies and procedures on safeguarding adults and safeguarding children

Supporting the administrative team on an as-required basis

Undertaking all mandatory training and induction programmes

Contributing to and embracing the spectrum of clinical governance

Maintaining a clean, tidy, effective working area at all times

Attending a formal appraisal with their manager at least every 12 months. Once a performance/training objective has been set, progress will be reviewed on a regular basis so that new objectives can be agreed
