Job summary

General Practice Assistants (GPAs) form part of a multi-disciplinary team within primary care, providing a support role by carrying out administrative tasks to free up GP time and contribute to the smooth running of the Practice.

The post holder may also undertake a 9 month training course covering 5 domains of the General Practice Assistant post, dependant on availability of the course.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will help to improve standards across a wide range of clinical and administrative activity. The position is suitable for someone who wishes to demonstrate initiative and to develop their own skills further.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To support the smooth running of clinics by performing the more routine administration on behalf of the GP, freeing up their time to focus on the patient.

To extract all information from clinical letters that need coding and adding to medical records.

To action referral tasks from the clinical team, ensuring referrals are sent to the most appropriate service.

To provide support to the GPs through processing repeat medication requests using the agreed practice protocols.

To provide support to the Practice Manager for project work, day-to-day tasks and specific assigned tasks within the Practice.

To support the practice in the delivery of the Network Contract DES and Quality and Outcome Framework specifications.

To ensure that meeting actions are recorded, disseminated, and followed up in a timely way; ensure relevant practice staff are aware of meeting decisions and actions / outcomes, and chase for action resolution and update.

To support with chronic disease and drug monitoring recall systems

Dipping urine, taking blood pressure, performing ECGs and phlebotomy (if trained)

To manage data quality issues, providing support and guidance to practice staff in the use of the clinical system to promote quality achievement.

The post-holder will need to become familiar with all functions of the clinical system and their applications, plus national and local quality standards for primary care.

The post holder will be aware of the various statutory requirements and will assist in implementation as directed by the practice manager. There is a need to work closely with reception and clinical staff to ensure the smooth running of the practice, reporting any problems encountered to the relevant person.

Training requirements will be monitored by yearly appraisal. Personal development will be encouraged and supported by the practice. It is the individuals responsibility to remain up to date with recent developments.

  • Advanced keyboard skills including a high standard of word processing skills.
  • General Practice Assistant (GPA) accredited skills certificate or equivalent qualification.
