Job summary

We are looking for a Qualified Dispenser to join our dispensing team, working between our Chapel St Leonards and Ingoldmells surgeries.

This is a full-time role. Working 32.5 hours per week within Practice opening hours.

However, we will consider part time applications if an applicant can be flexible in working additional days/hours to cover for holidays and sickness.

Our dispensing team are key to the success of the Practice. Working with our Pharmacist and Clinicians you will provide invaluable support to meet the needs of our Patients and Practice colleagues.

This role is wide ranging and as well as dispensing, requires completion of administrative tasks. Experience and knowledge of IT and telephony would be advantageous, preferably within a busy environment.

A dispensing qualification (minimum of level 2) is essential for this post.

Full training in use of SystmOne software and procedures will be provided.

Main duties of the job

Preparing prescriptions by counting pills, labelling bottles and compounding medications. Ensuring compliance by monitoring the prescription-filing process. Carrying out administrative duties and keeping detailed records. Gathering, organising and assessing patient information, including electronic patient records.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • To ensure the processing of all relevant prescriptions as authorised by GPs, Nurse Practitioners and prescribing Nurses where appropriate in accordance with the principles of good practice.
  • To ensure that all medicines and appliances dispensed are checked against the prescription and whenever there is doubt about the appropriateness of the item, or about the dose or labelling instructions, to check with the authorising Doctor or Duty Doctor.
  • To issue stock items and prepared prescriptions.
  • To collect all due prescription charges and ensure that the patient declaration on the reverse of the FP10 is duly filled in and signed by the patient.
  • To ensure that all monies received or handled on behalf of the practice are appropriate stored and forwarded for banking and a record kept of all transactions.
  • To provide support for end of month prescription processing.
  • To endorse all prescription forms as appropriate. The forms should be bundled in accordance with current PPA guidelines and include any necessary accompanying paperwork such as the FP34D and invoices as required by the PPA.
  • To promptly forward all invoices and dispensary related correspondence to the Finance Administrator/Dispensary Manager for necessary action.
  • To operate efficient stock control appropriate to the needs of the Practice with the objective of ensuring continuity of supply for patients and minimising wastage through out of date stock.
  • To maintain an adequate supply of dispensing packaging, including bottles, cartons and spoons.
  • To ensure that drugs are stored in an appropriate manner in accordance with the accompanying instructions.
  • To ensure shelves and all work surfaces are regularly cleaned to maintain a high level of hygiene within the dispensary and that all dispensary equipment is kept clean and in good working order.
  • To take prompt action in response to any drug alert bulletins that may be received from time to time.
  • To ensure that refrigerated items are stored at the appropriate temperature and to maintain a temperature control record/logbook.
  • To maintain full and accurate records of all dispensing transactions incorporating the use of computers when available and appropriate.
  • To undertake any necessary work as may be required and appropriate to maintain a high standard and efficient dispensing service.
  • To ensure that Particular attention and due regard is paid to the legal processes and best practice required when dispensing controlled drugs.

To always follow Dispensing Standard Operating Procedures and raise any concerns with line managers.
