About the role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for the position of a Practice Nurse to join our friendly and supportive Practice. We are accepting a junior or newly qualified registered nurse to join our team who is looking to develop their skills as a Practice Nurse.

We are considering both part-time and full-time positions.

We are seeking an enthusiastic, self-motivated and flexible nurse to join our growing team of 6 partners, 3 salaried GPs, 2 GP Registrars, 1 ANP, 2 Practice Nurses and 1 Health Care Assistant.

We offer a structured induction programme, a supportive environment, as well as in-house annual appraisals and development opportunities.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for the delivery of basic practice nursing services to our practice population. Supported by our senior nurses, they will deliver care within the boundaries of their role, focusing upon supporting patients to be healthy, monitoring long-term conditions, health prevention as well as providing diagnostics and screening activities. Main duties will include:

  • Undertaking health checks
  • Dressings and wound care management
  • Suture removal
  • Adult and childhood immunisations
  • Cervical cytology screening
  • Spirometry, ECGs and other diagnostic tests
  • Urine testing
  • Chronic disease management (subject to training and experience)
  • Health promotion including dietary information and smoking cessation support

About us

Thurleigh Road Practice is a friendly, supportive and innovative training practice of 14,500 patients operating in modern purpose-built premises situated in a pleasant residential area between Clapham and Wandsworth Common.

We are part of The Nightingale PCN (Thurleigh Road Practice and Balham Park Surgery) and our expanding PCN staffing include a Clinical Pharmacist, First Contact Practitioner, Social Prescriber and Care Coordinators.

We hold weekly clinical meetings to offer peer support as well as informal daily catch-up sessions and regular nurse check-ins. The practice is not normally open on weekends or bank holidays.

Job description

Job responsibilities

· To undertake opportunistic screening when clinically required e.g. BP measuring, weight monitoring, new patient health checks and NHS health checks.

· To undertake wound care management, assessment and dressings in line with local policy. 

To carry out suture removal.

· To contribute to the maintenance of the Practice disease registers.

· To support patients to adopt health promotion and provide advice on lifestyle issues – promoting and supporting patients in changing any unhealthy behaviours e.g. smoking cessation, diet, exercise.

· To provide adult and child immunisations – following appropriate training as required.

· To perform urinalysis, wound or sexual health swabs as required applying infection control measures when handling specimen, bodily fluids, spillages. To ensure awareness of local Infection Control policies and adhere to this.

· To carry out ear examination and syringing – following appropriate training if required

· To perform cervical screening and promote breast awareness following appropriate training.

· Subject to experience – to undertake chronic disease management, initiate process of diagnosis in those suspected to have chronic disease e.g. diabetes, asthma – referring to other clinicians as appropriate. 

· To provide advice, support and where appropriate administer vaccination for patients travelling abroad – following appropriate training if required.

· To support and advise women requesting information relating to family planning.

· To assist senior practitioners in providing minor-surgery sessions as necessary

· To undertake spirometry and reversibility testing.

· To undertake ECGs and 24 ABPM in the absence of the Health Care Assistant and following training.

· To work alongside the Health Care Assistants to help develop their skills.

· To act as a facilitator for the Parenting Courses held at the Thurleigh Road Practice.

· To support the practice team in achieving quality indicators and targets of the GP contract including childhood vaccinations and any other relevant performance indicators.

· To work independently using own initiative and being accountable for own professional actions. Ensuring nursing practice is carried out in line with current evidence based research.
