Main duties of the job
The Practice nurse will work as part of the primary healthcare
team providing personal medical services to practice patients. They will become a member of a large supportive nursing team. Initially managing the patients who attend the treatment room, carrying out injections, wound care, ecg's, venepuncture and suture removal etc.
They will then further develop within a specilaist area and provide care for patinets with long term conditions.

Job summary:
The following are the core responsibilities of the practice nurse (PN). The PN will work as part of the primary healthcare team providing personal medical services to practice patients.
Essential Qualifications:
- Registered first level nurse.
- 2 years post registration experience.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Post registration qualification on care of patients with long term conditions.
- Teaching or assessment qualification.
- Practice nurse course.
Job responsibilities:
- General treatment duties including wound care / ulcer care/ doppler, removal of sutures, ECGs, venepuncture, routine injections, blood pressure monitoring etc.
- Providing health promotion advice and referring to relevant well-being programmes.
- Providing family planning /contraceptive services
- Cervical cytology
- Help implement and run vaccination programmes for adults and children, including baby immunisations clinics.
- Support the clinical team with individualised care planning, group consultation work, treatment and referral to appropriate services for patients with long term conditions.
- Assisting GPs/ clinicians with minor surgery, coil / implant fittings
- Requesting relevant pathology tests and undertaking urinalysis.
- Following agreed clinical protocols with referral to senior nurses or GPs as appropriate
Other tasks will include.
- Supporting the team in dealing with clinical emergencies.
- Supporting the clinical team with all safeguarding matters in accordance with local and national policies.
- Chaperoning and assisting patients who are being examined by another clinician.
- Order vaccinations and immunisations to maintain stock levels.
- Participation in administrative systems in the practice
- Maintaining accurate records at all times, ensuring SNOWMED codes are used effectively.
- Attend and participate in any practice meetings when required.
- On occasion there may be a requirement to undertake home visits or to work on a different site within the PCN according to staffing levels.
- Any other delegated duties appropriate to the post. There may be other tasks dependant on workload and as the role evolves.
