Job
Summary:
You will be responsible for
drawing blood samples from patients of the Westgate Practice. You will
determine the best method for obtaining blood samples and provide compassionate
care with a kind bedside manner to all patients. Your job will include communicating
with GPs, Nurses, Reception and Administration staff and the local hospital
laboratories.
Duties and Responsibilities:
DR1.
Ensuring that the patient is as comfortable and relaxed as
possible and confirming their agreement to the collection of a blood
sample
DR2.
Collection of sample(s) of blood in
accordance with training and procedures.
DR3.
Ensuring
samples are stored in appropriate containers.
DR4.
Accurate,
legible labelling of all samples to confirm patient identity.
DR5.
Checking patient identification against GP/nurse request
and confirming with patient whenever possible.
DR6.
Recording collection of blood sample in patient record in
accordance with practice procedure.
DR7.
Ensuring that samples are dispatched to the appropriate
laboratories in a timely fashion.
Ensuring that anomalies are reported to a senior member of staff.
DR8.
Notifying the GP/nurse of any significant patient issues.
DR9.
Liaising with
and assisting members of the nursing and administrative team.

DR11.
Work effectively within the nursing team and alongside the
reception/administrative staff and doctors.
To help promote and gain patient consent from those who would like to
participate in the Research and Surveillance Centre Serology Programme.
To liaise/inform the Management Assistant regarding the ordering and
management of stock and resources for the programme.

Administrative
support:
Undertake basic administrative
activities to include:
AS1.
Answering the
telephone, receiving and transmitting messages.
AS2.
Arrange patients appointments as necessary.
AS3.
Liaise with other health care professionals.
AS4.
Electronic patient record keeping.
AS5.
Stocking of rooms as necessary
AS6.
Clinical cleaning and calibration of Nursing equipment

commensurate with their grade and post.
Confidentiality:
All employees are subject to the
requirements of the Data Protection Act and must maintain strict confidentiality
in respect of patient records.
Safeguarding:
All employees are required to act in such a way that at all
times safeguards the health and well-being of children and vulnerable adults.
Familiarisation with and adherence to Safeguarding policies is an essential
requirement of all employees as is participation in related mandatory/statutory
training.
No
Smoking Policy:
Staff may not smoke whilst in
Health Centre or Practice premises. Full
support will be given to any member of staff wishing to cease.
Flexibility:
Flexibility is essential at all
times. Staff may be required to work at
the Shenstone branch surgery from time to time.
Uniform:
A uniform will be provided and
worn by all staff whilst on duty. A name
badge will also be worn at all times.

Health
and Safety:
Whilst the
Practice and the Building Providers are responsible for safeguarding your
health, safety and welfare whilst at work, all employees have an equal
responsibility for maintaining safe working practices for their own health and
safety whilst in employment. The post
holder has a responsibility to bring to the attention of the HR Officer any
failing which could be to the detriment of self, other employees, patients or
visitors.
Staff must also ensure that they
are familiar with the procedures to be followed in case of fire and that they
know where the nearest fire alarm, extinguishers and fire exits are situated.
Changes
in Primary Care:
The above

commensurate with their grade and post.
Flexibility is essential at all times to ensure that the
Practice is well staffed, especially to cover holiday and sickness. Staff may be required to work at any of the
Practices premises.
Changes in
Primary Care: The post holder should be
aware that these tasks are subject to change, particularly when changes are
imposed on the Practice by external organisations and the NHS in general. Any substantial changes will be discussed and
training given.
Training:
The practice uses the EMIS Web
clinical system. Full training will be
provided on an ongoing basis.
