Job summary

We area Scunthorpe based GP Surgery looking for an experienced Practice Nurse to join our friendly team who will be required to deliver all treatment room services.

Additional experience in family planning, chronic disease management - i.e. Asthma/COPD is desirable, along with knowledge in clinical QOF requirements.

The successful candidate should also demonstrate a good knowledge of IT with leadership, communication and training skills.

Hours: 20 hours per week.

Plus holiday/sickness cover.

Main duties of the job

  • The main purpose of the post is to assist medical personnel in the care of patients to include treatment, preventative care, screening and patient education; and candidates should have the relevant skills/training to provide a professional and effective treatment room service including: ECGs, injections, BP monitoring, urine testing, swabs. Collection, recording and packing of specimens for onward transportation to the pathology department. Chaperoning Doctors during certain procedures/ examinations. Working participation with partners or independently to agreed protocols. Provide advice on vaccinations both primary immunisations and travel and where appropriate administer.Perform dressings, phlebotomy, suture removal, ear syringing. Provide advice on travel health after training. Deliver a comprehensive cervical cytology service after attending necessary training/updates.

About us

We are a friendly GP practice based in Scunthorpe delivering primary care services to approximately 10,000 patients.

Our Main Surgery site is situated on Ashby Road, Scunthorpe (with a Branch Surgery in the Ironstone Centre on West Street, Scunthorpe). Our patients can attend either site for their medical care.

We are also a Training Practice, which means we are responsible for the training of qualified doctors who wish to become General Practitioners.

Cedar Medical Practice is registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) under the Health and Social Care Act 2008.

RESPONSIBLE: The Partners (Clinical)

Practice Manager (Administrative)

HOURS: 20 hours per week

MAIN PURPOSE OF POST: To assist medical personnel in the care of patients to include treatment, preventative care, screening and patient education.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  1. To provide a treatment room service
    • General nursing tasks to include dressings minor injury and leg ulcers, phlebotomy, suture removal, ear syringing, ECG, injections, blood pressure monitoring, urine testing, swabs.
    • Collection, recording and packing of specimens for onward transportation to the pathology department.
    • Chaperoning Doctors during certain procedures rectal examinations, cervical smears, breast checks, vaginal examinations.
    • Work in participation with partners or independently to agreed protocols.

2. Supplies and Equipment

  • Ensure maintenance of equipment.

  • Check stock levels of pathology bottles, injections and medications for the doctors emergency bags, dressings and other routine supplies.

  • Rotate supplies of vaccinations in the refrigerator; ensure adequate supplies and monitoring of fridge temperature.

  • Assess future needs for equipment and liaise with Nursing Team colleagues regarding need and provision.

  • Ensure adequate supplies are available in the doctors rooms and are not out of date.

  • Check emergency equipment for expiry dates and stock.

3. Health Education and Screening

  • Provide advice on vaccinations both primary immunisations and travel, where appropriate administer such vaccinations. Advise on travel health. This is after training.

  • Provide a comprehensive cervical cytology service after attending necessary update.

  • Identify and target specific groups for preventative intervention and develop measures to implement screening policies i.e. flu and pneumococcal vaccination.

  • Provide general and specific screening and advice services through well person clinics and new patient registration interviews as necessary.

  • Advise on smoking cessation following current guidelines.

  • Advise on alcohol consumption to follow current guidelines.

  • Advise on family planning following current guidelines.

  • Give advice on current healthy eating guidelines.

4. Administration

  • Participate in the administrative and professional responsibilities of the practice team.

  • Ensure an accurate record of all consultation and treatments are recorded in the patients notes and computer database.

  • Ensure collection of statistical data required to carry out regular audits pertaining to nursing care.

  • Audit of own work within the surgery.

5. Liaison

  • Provide a point of contact with patients to advise on specific topics or suggest referral to third party.

  • Maintain effective lines of communication with colleagues and outside agencies, with appropriate regard to confidentiality.

6. Research

  • Co-operate and participate in any research project taking place within the practice as required.

7. Health and Safety

  • Ensure compliance with the Health and Safety policy within the practice and fulfil personal responsibilities under current Health and Safety legislation.

  • Work within guidelines of the local Infection Control policy.

  • Cleaning of surgical instruments.

8. Training and Professional Development

  • Attend courses as deemed necessary to maintain a high level of competence and expertise.

  • Attend courses to facilitate professional development.
