Job summary

To support the practice nursing and administrative teams in the delivery of clinical and administrative services, working as part of the practice multi-disciplinary team, delivering care within their scope of practice to the entitled patient population.

The Healthcare Assistant will deliver and assist clinical staff in the provision of treatment, preventative care, health promotion and patient education whilst also supporting the admin aspects of the role.

Main duties of the job

Supported by the nursing team within the practice, the Health Care Assistant (HCA) will deliver care within the boundaries of their role and in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols. Responsible for the care delivered, demonstrating critical thinking and skills in clinical decision making within the parameters of their qualifications and role requirements. They will focus upon supporting patients to be healthy by assessing their needs, providing HCA care, health education advice, screening activities, implementing care at the surgery, community or other settings, maintaining clinically accurate records and running clinics. They will work collaboratively with the general practice team to meet the needs of patients and support the delivery of policy and procedures, and providing HCA guidance as required.

Job responsibilities

Main duties of the job

The following are the core responsibilities of the Healthcare Assistant. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:

a. Carry out baseline observations such as pulse oximetry, blood pressure, temperature and pulse rate, recording findings accurately

b. Undertake wound care, dressings and other clinical tasks as required

d. Carry out weight management checks as directed

e. Act as a chaperone as required

f. Undertake venepuncture

g. Administer flu, shingles, pneumonia and B12 vaccinations

h. Carry out ECGs as requested

i. Carry out NHS health checks

j. Carry out part 1 diabetic checks (foot checks, BP)

k. Support the practice nurse with health promotion programmes

l. Ensure specimens are recorded and ready for onward transportation

m. Provide support during minor operations as required

n. Ensure all clinical rooms are adequately stocked and prepared for each session

o. Ensure fridges are cleaned routinely in accordance with guidance

p. Ensure clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the organisations IPC policy

q. Deliver opportunistic health promotion where appropriate

r. Perform ear syringe procedure

s. Support in the postnatal clinics

Essential

  • Experience working within a nursing team
