Job summary

The Role

The Level 1 Healthcare Assistant (HCA) is part of our team of seven HCAs across the organisation who provide support to our current clinical team.

Main duties of the job

o Phlebotomy

o Perform and record an ECG

o Blood Pressure checks / Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring

o Near patient testing for INR monitoring

o Capillary samples of blood glucose and haemoglobin

o Perform and record an audiometry test

o Assist with setting up of equipment and chaperoning for Women's Health Procedures

o Application of basic dressings as directed by Practice Nurse

o Maintain stock levels / emptying clinical waste in consulting rooms

o Recording of specimens prior to dispatch by courier

o Liaison with pathology departments within secondary care as required

o Chaperoning for other clinicians as required

o General administrative support and computer data entry

o Any other duties as deemed appropriate to meet the needs of the Practice in the future.

Working under the supervision of the Nurse Manager and team members demonstrate developing competence and clinical skills in the duties listed below, ensuring all information is clearly and objectively recorded according to practice policy.

o When dealing with sensitive or confidential matters that may also have legal or ethical considerations, for example, safeguarding, substance abuse, sexual orientation and gender identity, racial and ethnic diversity, mental illness, disabilities, etc.

o To support patients to adopt health promotion strategies, and apply principles of self-care, including referring or sign-posting to other services that may support their wider well-being, e.g. District Nurses, Social Prescribers, Health & Well-being coaches, etc.

o Work collaboratively with your colleagues within Mereside practices and across the local health economy to manage risks and issues, and integrate effectively with health and social care providers, ensuring consistency of care across settings and practices.

  • Be confident in, and/or willing to learn, relevant technologies to facilitate remote consultations and effective cross-site working (e.g. MS Teams, AskMyGP, SystmOne, AccuRx).

Facilitation and Learning

Able to recognise personal development needs and also facilitate learning for patient and carers.

This requires you to:

  • Proactively share learning, information, and good practice insights across the practice and wider organisation to facilitate individual and team learning
  • Advocate for, and positively contribute to, a cohesive culture of organisational learning and collaboration both within and between teams, to ensure the best patient experience throughout their entire journey.

You are part of the Mereside practice nursing team with delegated responsibility for patient care, being accountable to the Nurse Manager. This requires:

  • Contribute positively to a sense of cohesion, and foster a culture of wider collaboration, across the organisation, engaging effectively with collaboration tools such as MS Teams to improve communication and information sharing across sites and teams, including remote workers
  • Prioritise own workload and manage your time effectively to ensure that cases are handled by the most clinically appropriate member of the team, and completed in a timely manner
  • Be proactive within your team to identify and service suggest improvements to the Nursing Manager based on feedback, evaluation, and need.
