Main duties of the job

Job Purpose

The purpose of this role is to deliver safe, high quality primary care services to the practice population. The post holder will work within their scope of practice, maintaining appropriate professional boundaries while delivering a range of primary healthcare interventions, including phlebotomy.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The post holder will contribute to the delivery of effective, patient-centred care and support the ongoing development of services within the practice. They will work in line with agreed policies, procedures, and clinical guidelines to ensure safe and consistent standards of care.

The role requires the demonstration of professional standards, effective communication, advocacy for patients, and a commitment to continuous improvement and performance.

We are local surgeries run by doctors, nurses, and associated staff who know their patients and care deeply about the quality of healthcare provided within our communities.

  • Relevant phlebotomy qualification or evidence of competence
  • Willingness to undertake further training and competency assessments

Desirable

  • Experience working in primary care, GP practice, or community setting
  • Experience of working with a diverse patient population

  • Competence in venepuncture and specimen handling
  • Knowledge of infection prevention and control (IPC)
  • Understanding of patient identification, consent, and documentation requirements
  • Ability to recognise and respond appropriately to adverse reactions (e.g., fainting, bleeding, anxiety)
  • Basic awareness of safeguarding and professional boundaries
  • Effective communication skills, including the ability to reassure anxious or vulnerable patients
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Basic IT skills and accurate data entry capability

  • Familiarity with clinical systems e.g. EMIS, SystmOne
  • Knowledge of primary care pathways and services
