Main duties of the job
Were seeking a qualified NVQ Level 2 Dispenser with experience in a pharmacy or dispensary setting to join our hardworking and supportive team. This is a physically active role youll be on your feet throughout the shift and regularly using a small ladder, so energy and mobility are essential.
Attention to detail and confidence using computers are key, as youll be handling prescriptions, managing stock, and working within clinical systems. The role is varied, often fast-paced, and requires flexibility to provide holiday and sickness cover when needed.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
DISPENSING
- Open up the Dispensary at the start of the day and make all necessary preparations to start dispensing following Standard Operating Procedures and including monitoring of fridge temperatures.
- Dispense medication as stated on prescriptions (NHS and private), maintaining accurate dispensing records and ensuring that the medication is labelled with the correct drug name, strength, quantity, directions for use, patients name and includes any additional required information.
- Adhere to practice policies and procedures for dispensing medicines, in particular those relating to expensive and controlled drugs.
- Obtain or provide a second-check on all medication if it is a new item to be included or amended on the computer database, or if there is a system warning message.
- Maintain appropriate stock levels of medicines, checking expiry dates and storage conditions.
- Place accurate and timely orders with suppliers and accept deliveries of medication. Ensure stock is correctly rotated.
- Maintain dispensary work areas and equipment, ensuring they are clean and in a good state of repair. Ensure equipment is calibrated and accurate.
- Dispense patient dossette boxes and perform associated administration.
- Place orders with North West Ostomy Supplies, Specials and hosiery companies as required and enter details into the relevant order sheets. Receive deliveries and process accordingly.
- Sort and file Exempt prescription forms once signed by the doctors.
- Close down the Dispensary at the end of the day, ensure computers are off, cupboards are secure and windows are locked.
ADMINISTRATION
- Using the SystmOne clinical computer system ensure all relevant information is recorded within individual patient records to include raising and actioning Tasks assigned to the Dispensary.
- Endorse prescriptions accurately by checking prices with suppliers as necessary.
- Ensure the safe disposal of returned and out-of-date medications. Record disposal of Controlled Drugs returned from patients.
- Maintain and order stocks of dispensary packaging materials.
DISPENSARY RECEPTION
- Ensure that the correct medication and prescription is given to the patient, confirming the details shown on the prescription form or hand held device and the bag label.
- Accurately complete any exemption criteria on the hand held device or the reverse of the prescription form.
- Advise patients about pre-payment certificates and how to apply for exemption certificates.
- Collect prescription fees (NHS and private) from patients.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
- Adhere to all aspects of the Health and Safety at Work Act and Regulations and Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) regulations, ensuring good hygiene, cleanliness and a safe environment in the dispensary.
COMMUNICATION
- Respond to queries from patients, pharmacies, hospitals, nursing homes etc, whether by face-to-face contact, telephone, email etc.
- Liaise with members of the PET and/or Clinical Teams regarding medication for individual patients.
- Communicate effectively and regularly with other members of the dispensing team to ensure the accurate exchange of information relating to patients and their medication.
- Attend regular team meetings with dispensary colleagues and other practice staff.
GENERAL
- Participate in an annual performance review, to include contribution, a record of personal and professional development and discussing targets for the future.
- Be pro-active in developing new initiatives in the dispensary.
- Be prepared to wear clothing appropriate to the role.
- Be prepared to cover the work of colleagues when they are absent through annual leave or illness or when the needs of the Dispensary dictate.
- At all times maintain absolute confidentiality.
