Job summary
CH Medical are looking for an experienced, compassionate and enthusiastic Healthcare Assistant to join our friendly and supportive practice team. The Healthcare Assistant will deliver and assist clinical staff in the provision of treatment, preventative care, health promotion and patient education. The successful candidate will work alongside our existing nursing team which currently comprises of a Trainee Advanced Nurse Practitioner, 3 Practice Nurses and 3 Healthcare Assistants.
The ideal candidate will have previous HCA experience (preferably within general practice and with relevant qualifications) and be committed to providing patient focused care. They should be a good team player with a flexible approach to providing a high standard of care to patients.
Good IT skills are required, and knowledge of EMIS Web would be desirable.
This role is offered on 18 hour per week basis as follows:
- Monday 8.30am-2.30pm
- Thursday 8.30am-2.30pm
- Friday 7am-1pm
Main duties of the job
To work as part of the practice multi-disciplinary team, delivering clinical care within their scope of practice.
Working under the guidance of the nursing team and GPs, you will carry out a range of clinical tasks such as:
- Phlebotomy
- Blood pressure monitoring
- New patient health checks
- Urinalysis
- Annual health checks for chronic disease management and NHS Health Checks
- Acting as a chaperone (when needed)
- Providing lifestyle advice to patients - making any necessary referrals, as appropriate
- Restocking consumables, vaccines, oxygen and emergency drug boxes ensuring appropriate stock rotation and expiry date checks
- Ensure that clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the practice IPC policy
- Supporting the practice to achieve QOF targets and provide Local Enhanced Services

Working under the direct supervision of the Practice Nurses and strictly in accordance with specific Practice guidelines and protocols, the Healthcare Assistant will assist the Practice clinical team in the provision and delivery of prescribed programmes of patient care.
Job responsibilities:
Assist in and perform routine tasks related to patient care as directed by senior nursing staff and GPs. Such tasks may include:
- New Patient Health Checks
- Urinalysis
- Phlebotomy
- Annual health checks for chronic disease management and NHS Health Checks
- Blood pressure monitoring
- Chaperoning and assisting patients where appropriate who are being examined by another clinician
- Requesting basic pathology tests, for example urine culture, swabs
- Processing and management of laboratory samples requested by GPs/Nurses
- Vaccine/cold chain storage, monitoring and recording
- Surgical equipment and vaccine re-stocking and stock rotation
- Preparing and maintaining environments and equipment before, during and after patient care interventions including assisting GPs during the performance of minor operations
- Assisting in the assessment and surveillance of patients health and well-being
- Undertaking specific clinical activities for named patients that have been delegated and taught specifically in relation to that individual
- Helping to raise awareness of health and well-being and how it can be promoted
- Ensuring specimens are recorded and ready for onward transportation
- Ensuring clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the organisations IPC Policy
- Support in the delivery of enhanced services and other service requirements
- Undertake all mandatory training and induction programmes
- Maintain a clean, tidy, effective working area at all times
- Working within national and local protocols where these exist
- Awareness of your duties and responsibilities regarding current legislation and adhere to practice policies and procedures on Safeguarding Adults and Safeguarding Children
- Recognising the boundaries of their practice and know when and to whom patients should be referred
