HCA or Nursing Associate

Job summary

To support the practice nursing team in the delivery of nursing services, working as part of the practice multidisciplinary team, delivering care within their scope of practice to the entitled patient population. The HCA/NA will deliver and assist clinical staff in the provision of treatment, preventative care, health promotion and patient education.

Main duties of the job

  • Undertake venepuncture
  • Carry out baseline observations such as pulse oximetry , blood pressure, temperature, pulse rate, recording findings accurately
  • Undertake new patient health checks
  • Facilitate routine and 24-hour BP monitoring, advising patients accordingly
  • Act as a chaperone as required
  • Processing and management of laboratory samples requested by GPs/clinical pharmacists/nurses
  • Preparing and maintaining environments and equipment before, during and after patient care interventions including assisting GPs during the performance of minor operations and sexual health clinics
  • Support the practice with health promotion programmes
  • Undertake wound care, dressings and other clinical tasks as required
  • Support the practice nurse with the management of chronic disease clinics
  • Carry out BMI checks as directed
  • Administer flu vaccinations under a patient specific direction (if trained)
  • Carry out ear irrigation under the supervision of the practice nurse (if trained)
  • Processing and management of specimens for onward transportation
  • Vaccine/cold chain storage, monitoring and recording
  • Ensure all clinical rooms are adequately stocked
  • Ensure clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the practice IPC policy
  • Deliver opportunistic health promotion where appropriate
  • Carry out long term condition assessments

    We are a large, dynamic, friendly practice consisting of 4 Partners, 14 Salaried GPs, 6 Clinical Pharmacists, 1 Nurse Manager,2 Practice Nurses, , 2 HCAs, 2 Phlebotomists & 2 Social Prescribers. We also have a Health & Wellbeing team that offer physiotherapy.

    We serve 26,000 patients with a focus on clinical excellence and engagement with the modern NHS. We have a very strong team ethos and are looking for committed and enthusiastic Practice Nurse who can bring their own valuable knowledge and skills to our Practice.

    We are a teaching Practice with a regular allocation of trainees, we also demonstrate strong performance in QOF, CQC and we play a lead role within our PCN.

    Job responsibilities

    The following are the core responsibilities of the healthcare assistant. There may be on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:

    • Undertake venepuncture

    • Undertake H. pylori breath testing as requested by GP or Clinical Pharmacist

    In addition to the primary responsibilities, the healthcare assistant may be requested to:

    • Participate in practice audit as directed by the audit lead

    • Participate in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care
    • Support and participate in shared learning within the practice

    Additional responsibilities for an NA:

    • Long Term Conditions Management Asthma, Diabetes, COPD, CVD, Learning Disabilities, Anticoagulation monitoring (essential)
    • Vaccinations - Offer advice about childhood and adult vaccinations and ensure vaccines are administered under PSD's (essential)
