Job summary
Are you friendly, organised, and confident on the phone? Do you like helping people and being part of a team where what you do genuinely matters every day? If so, we would love to hear from you.
We are looking for a GP Receptionist to join our busy, welcoming, and supportive reception team. Our receptionists are the heart of the practice and the first point of contact for our patients. This is a people focused role where kindness, communication, and teamwork are just as important as efficiency.
The role includes both face to face and telephone work, with a high volume of calls throughout the day (we are a GP surgery after all!), alongside essential admin tasks that keep the surgery running smoothly. It is a role that keeps you busy, involved, and connected with both patients and colleagues.
No two days are the same.
You will be the first point of contact for patients, answering calls and dealing with a wide range of enquiries. This includes helping patients book appointments, answering general questions, and supporting with administrative requests such as prescriptions and test results. You will listen carefully to patients, many of whom may be ill, stressed, anxious or upset, and guide them to the most appropriate service or clinician in a calm, professional, and friendly way.
Main duties of the job
This role can be challenging at times, especially during busy periods, but it is also extremely rewarding. Every conversation you have has the potential to make someones day a little easier, and the work you do really does make a difference. It is not always about Doctors and Nurses, we all play our part at School Lane.
The skills we are looking for
- A friendly, confident, and clear telephone manner
- Empathy and emotional awareness when speaking with patients who may be distressed or worried
- Good communication skills using simple, plain language
- The ability to stay organised and work efficiently in a busy environment
- A strong understanding of confidentiality and professionalism
- A genuine team player who supports colleagues
- A good sense of humour and a positive attitude
If you enjoy working with people, thrive in a busy setting, and want a role where your work truly matters, we would love to welcome you to our team.
About us
By joining School Lane Surgery, you will become part of a close and supportive team who genuinely look out for one another. Every role matters, and reception is central to everything we do. Without our reception team, the surgery simply would not function.
We provide full training and ongoing support to help you feel confident and successful in the role. We also value development and progression. Many of our staff started on reception and have gone on to roles within nursing, administration, or management. We are a practice that believes in growing our own staff and supporting people to develop their skills.
