Main duties of the job

As a Dispenser at Prince of Wales Surgery, you will be part of a busy, patient-focused dispensary team. Your day will involve preparing and issuing prescriptions, managing stock levels, and ensuring medicines are dispensed safely and efficiently. You will interact regularly with patients, offering friendly advice and support, and work closely with GPs, nurses, and pharmacists to maintain a smooth, high-quality service.

In addition to core dispensing duties, you will have opportunities to develop your leadership skills, support colleagues, and contribute to continuous improvements within the dispensary.

As a Dispenser at Prince of Wales Surgery, you will play a key role in the safe, efficient, and patient-centred running of the dispensary. You will be responsible for the preparation, dispensing, and supply of prescriptions, stock management, and maintaining accurate patient and financial records.

This is a development role: in addition to core dispensing duties, you will receive structured support to develop leadership skills, mentor junior colleagues, and contribute to continuous improvement within the dispensary.

The successful candidate will hold a Pharmacy Technician qualification.

The role requires excellent attention to detail, organisational ability, strong communication skills, and a willingness to embrace professional development.

Main Duties

Dispensing and Patient Services

  • Accurately dispense acute and repeat prescriptions in line with practice protocols and legal requirements.
  • Issue prescriptions and collect patient charges or verify exemptions.
  • Provide advice and support to patients on prescription queries, referring to GPs or pharmacists as required.
  • Handle controlled drugs in line with legislation and practice policy.
  • Ensure safe disposal of pharmaceutical waste.
  • Maintain accurate records of dispensing transactions.

Stock Management

  • Manage stock levels, including ordering, rotation, checking deliveries, and removing expired items.
  • Ensure drugs are received, stored, and refrigerated correctly with accurate temperature monitoring.
  • Liaise with suppliers and support invoice reconciliation.

Leadership Development

  • Take on delegated leadership responsibilities, such as mentoring junior staff, supporting training, and assisting with rota cover.
  • Contribute to updating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Attend training and leadership development sessions as agreed with your line manager.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives within the dispensary.
