Main duties of the job

  • The following are the core responsibilities of the Healthcare Assistant. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks, this will be dependant upon factors such as workload and staffing levels.
  • Assisting healthcare professionals in providing high-quality patient care.
  • Conducting new patient health checks, measurements, and routine tests.
  • Supporting patients with various healthcare needs, such as dressing changes, wound care, ECGs working within your scope of practice.
  • Ear irrigation when trained under the supervision of the Practice Nurse
  • Support the Practice Nurse with the management of chronic disease clinics.
  • When trained, administer flu & pneumonia vaccinations and B12 injections.
  • Maintaining accurate patient records and assisting with administrative tasks as required.
  • Upholding infection control standards and ensuring a clean and safe environment for patients.
  • Carry out BMI checks as directed.
  • Ensure specimens are recorded and ready for onward transport.
  • Ensure all clinical rooms are adequately stocked and prepared for each session.
  • Ensure fridges are cleaned routinely in accordance with extant guidance.
  • Ensure clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the organisation's IPC policy.
  • Deliver opportunistic health promotion where appropriate.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities:

New Registration health checks and assist with Health Promotion incentives, e.g. smoking cessation/NHS health checks.

To perform ECGs as required

To undertake and record baseline observations i.e. BP, pulse, oxygen saturations

To undertake urine analysis using appropriate equipment, highlight any abnormalities and record on clinical system.

To ensure that specimens brought in by patients, or taken by colleagues, are ready for collection by pathology service

Height/Weight/BMI monitoring

Routine BP monitoring

Ear assessment/irrigation following appropriate training / mentor assessment

Spirometry following appropriate training / mentor assessment

Assist with specific long-term conditions reviews e.g. COPD, Asthma (peak flow measurements), Diabetes (Foot checks, BMI, dietary advice)

To undertake assessment of simple wounds/ dressings and assist Practice nurses with more complex wounds/ leg ulcer dressings.

Following appropriate training undertake Doppler assessments and Leg Ulcer compression therapy (once competencies are achieved) with appropriate mentorship and assessment.

Chaperoning duties as required.

To assist in NHS seasonal health campaigns, such as, seasonal flu vaccinations.

Following training, the administration of B12 / Flu / Pneumonia injections (this list is not exhaustive), as per patient specific directives and instruction of trained colleagues.

Assist with minor procedures and contraception clinics in surgery as required.

Assisting in the assessment, surveillance, promotion and collection of data of patients health and well-being

To prepare consulting rooms and maintain stocks of equipment / supplies

Cleaning and maintenance of medical equipment
