Main duties of the job
As a Healthcare Assistant at Alwoodley Medical Centre, you will play a vital role in supporting both our clinical and administrative teams to deliver high-quality patient care. Your responsibilities are varied and patient-focused, including performing phlebotomy and routine blood tests, taking and recording vital signs, performing ECGs, and assisting with chronic disease monitoring and reviews for patients with long-term conditions such as diabetes, asthma, COPD, and hypertension. You will also provide health promotion advice, support opportunistic screening, and act as a chaperone when required.
You will support nurses and GPs by preparing patients for consultations, ensuring all observations and measurements are accurately recorded, and assisting with vaccine administration following training. On the administrative side, you will maintain accurate patient records, manage clinical stock, prepare consultation rooms, and support recall systems and follow-ups.
A key part of the role is patient engagement providing reassurance, guiding patients through procedures, and advocating for their needs to the wider clinical team. You will work with professionalism, discretion, and empathy, particularly when supporting vulnerable patients.

Clinical Support
- Phlebotomy and Blood Tests: Performing venepuncture for routine and monitoring blood tests, ensuring accurate labelling, and maintaining high standards of infection control.
- Processing Samples for the Laboratory
- Observations and Vital Signs: Measuring and recording blood pressure, pulse, weight, temperature, oxygen saturation, and other observations as directed by clinicians.
- Act as a Chaperone
- ECGs: Performing electrocardiograms where appropriate.
- Provide Clinical Support to Nurses and Other HCPs
- Chronic Disease Monitoring: Assisting with routine reviews for patients with long-term conditions such as diabetes, asthma, COPD, and hypertension.
- Health Promotion and Screening: Providing advice and information on healthy lifestyles, diet, smoking cessation, and opportunistic health checks (e.g., NHS Health Checks).

Administrative and Practice Support
- Ensuring accurate patient record-keeping in line with practice protocols and confidentiality standards.
- Competent IT Skills
- Preparing consultation rooms and clinical areas for appointments, including ensuring equipment is ready and sterile.
- Supporting recall systems and follow-ups for chronic disease management or routine tests.
- Assisting with stock management of clinical supplies, including ordering of consumables.
Patient Care and Communication
- Consulting with patients, providing reassurance, and guiding them through procedures.
- Supporting vulnerable patients with empathy, discretion, and professionalism.
- Acting as a patient advocate within the practice, ensuring patients needs and concerns are communicated effectively to the clinical team.
Professional Development and Opportunities
- Opportunity to expand clinical skills under supervision, such as phlebotomy, or assisting with minor procedures/wound care.
- Participation in training programs and professional development courses supported by the practice.
