Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Physicians Associate to jointhe Grand Union Primary Care Network, this job will be based at Bridgewater Surgery, Bridgewater Meriden and our new site on St Albans Road, Watford.
The post holder will work with a diverse range of people from different cultural and social backgrounds. The ability to work confidently and effectively within your professional boundaries, in a varied and sometimes challenging environment is essential.
You will be providing care for patients from initial history taking, clinical assessment, diagnosis, treatment and evaluation of their care under the supervision of a GP. You will demonstrate safe, clinical decision-making and expert care for patients within the general practice, in consultation with the duty GP. You will work with the multi-disciplinary general practice team to support the delivery of policy and procedures and meet the needs of patients.

Under supervision of a GP, you may be required to:
- Work clinical sessions
consisting of either telephone triage appointments, face to face
appointments or both
- Conduct home visits
following adequate training
- Triage incoming pathology
results and documents
- Act upon alerts (e.g. QOF,
local enhanced services etc.) and reminders during a consultation.
- Provide clinical services
required (within own competencies) as part of the GMS/PMS/APMS contract
held between NHSE and the individual Surgeries of the PCN.
- Undertake Surgeries during
extended hours (i.e. some evenings and Saturdays) in accordance with the
access needs of the practice population and the contractual obligation of
the practice and participation in other PCN activities, such as meetings,
open days and educational events.
- Respond to medical problems
presented by patients, including history taking and examination
- Provide confidence to
supervising GP in your findings and in you using your clinical findings to
justify the differential diagnosis
- Organise investigation,
treatment and referral where appropriate.
- Be confident in explaining
to patients their clinical management plan and able to modify plan
according to age and comorbidity.
- Develop consultation skills
to enable shared patient and practitioner decision
- Be able to justify choice of
medication. Able to understand the impact of comorbidities and other
medications, poly-pharmacy on agent choice and prognosis
- Provide appropriate
preventative health care and advice.
- Provide medical support as
required to patients referred by nursing staff
- Adhere to the practice
prescribing formulary, local and national guidelines.
- Under supervision of the GPs
in the practice , make professional, autonomous decisions in relation to
presenting problems, whether self-referred or referred from other health
care workers within the organisation
- Record clear and
contemporaneous IT based consultation notes to agreed standards
- Collect data for audit

Qualifications
Essential
- Physician Associate Postgraduate Diploma/Masters from accredited UK university
- Registered with Faculty of Physician Associates/PAMVR and or the General Medical Council following implementation of statutory regulation, working within the latest code of professional conduct (CIPD)
- Has passed the UK Physicians Associate (PA) National Re-Certification Exam which needs to be taken every six years
Experience
Essential
- Evidence of working autonomously or as part of a team
- Understanding and knowledge of healthcare provision in GP surgeries, QOF, Enhanced Services and national standards that inform practice (NSF, NICE Guidelines)
- Understanding GMC Good Medical Practice and the medico-legal aspects of PA role
- Experience and an awareness of common acute and chronic conditions that are likely to be seen in general practice
Desirable
- Experience of working in a primary care setting
- An appreciation of the new NHS landscape including the relationships between individual practices, PCNs and the commissioners
