GP Assistant (GPA)

Job summary

As part of the wider team in general practice, General Practice Assistants (GPA) provide a support role, carrying out administrative tasks.

GPAs are trained to undertake routine administration and basic clinical duties. They can help to free up GPs time and contribute to the smooth running of appointments, improving patients experience in the surgery.

The General Practice Assistant will support the smooth running of clinics by performing the more routine administration and basic clinical tasks on behalf of the GP, freeing up their time to focus on the patient. The GPA must ensure that they work within and recognise their scope of practice, escalating any concerns to the GP.

Main duties of the job

Assisting Clinical Pharmacists in the identification of the highest risk patients for drug monitoring and medication reviews

Contacting patients to arrange onward care and/or clinical feedback under instruction from the hospital or GPs

Extracting all information from clinical letters that needs coding and adding to notes when required

Arranging appointments, referrals, tests and follow up appointments of patients

Completing basic (non-opinion) forms and core elements of some forms for the GP to approve

Helping the GP liaise with outside agencies e.g., getting an on-call doctor on the phone to ask advice or arrange admission while the GP can continue with their consultation(s)

Qualifications

Essential

  • Have completed or working towards completing the GP Assistant framework
  • Can demonstrate Maths and English at GCSE level

Knowledge

Essential

  • Have a working knowledge of IT systems such as SystmOne and Microsoft Office products.
  • Can demonstrate an understanding of confidentiality.
  • Demonstrates a knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Have an understanding of the referral process

Experience

Essential

  • Have worked in a health environment
  • Have worked in a team
  • Have worked with a clinical IT system
  • Have used clinical coding
