Job summary

As a Phlebotomist, you will play a vital role in supporting our clinical services by collecting blood samples from patients in a safe, professional, and caring manner. Youll work closely with our nursing and administrative teams to ensure samples are processed efficiently and patients feel at ease throughout their experience.Our GP Receptionist is the first point of contact for patients coming into the surgery. The post holder will be responsible for efficient, effective and friendly customer service / reception duties. Provide support to the clinical and administration teams to optimise the patients journey and be an ambassador for the Practice.

This post is either for 2 part time positions up to 20 hours or 1 full time position of 37 hours. The post holder must be flexible on days and be able to provide additional cover as and when required.

Main duties of the job

  • Perform venepuncture to collect blood samples from patients of all ages.
  • Ensure accurate labelling and handling of specimens.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and uphold infection control standards.
  • Provide reassurance and support to patients during procedures.
  • Record and manage data using clinical systems.
  • Provide clear and concise information to patients and understand the importance of discretion and confidentiality.
  • Have good communication skills and a calm manner to put patients at ease and give them opportunity to explain their needs.
  • Have a variety of questioning techniques in order to develop a full picture of the nature of the patient's problem and identity potentially serious problems.
  • Attend to patient queries on reception such as prescriptions and samples.
  • Build strong relationships with all team members.
  • Develop and maintain an in depth knowledge and understanding of the services provided by the Practice and in the wider health community; be able to use this knowledge to guide the patient to the service which is most likely to meet their needs.
  • GP room organisation.
  • Demonstrate assertiveness/quick thinking to attend to patients with confidence and sensitivity.

About us

The Thornton Practice was rated Outstanding by CQC (Care Quality Commission) in Dec 2018. We are a large practice well established practice with very little turnover of staff. We believe in putting the patient first but also support work life balance for our staff. There is a family atmosphere at the practice where support for one another is encouraged as well as developing skills and internal promotion.

The Practice Clinical team consists of: 4 GP Partners /3 Salaried GP's /2 Registrars (GP's in Training) /2 Advanced Nurse Practitioners /2 Clinical Pharmacists /1 Nurse Manager /5 Practice Nurses / 2 HCA's. The clinical team is supported by Senior Management and Middle Management team, and 25 highly skilled administrators

We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Phlebotomist and Receptionist to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for collecting blood samples from patients in a safe, efficient, and professional manner. You will play a key role in supporting diagnostic services and ensuring a positive patient experience. This role requires excellent interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to maintaining high standards of care and infection control.

The purpose of the phlebotomist role is to:

  • Perform venepuncture to collect blood samples from patients of all ages.
  • Ensure correct identification, labelling, and handling of specimens in line with clinical protocols.
  • Prepare patients for blood collection, providing reassurance and clear explanations.
  • Maintain accurate records of procedures and patient interactions using clinical systems.
  • Adhere to infection prevention and control guidelines at all times.
  • Monitor and report any adverse reactions or incidents during procedures.
  • Maintain stock levels of phlebotomy supplies and ensure equipment is clean and functional.
  • Participate in training and development activities to maintain competencies.

The purpose of the receptionist role is to:

  • Receive, assist and direct patients in accessing the appropriate service or healthcare professional in a courteous, efficient and effective way
  • Undertake a variety of reception and administration duties to assist in the smooth running of the Practice
  • Facilitate effective communication between patients, members of the primary health care team, secondary care and other associated health care agencies
  • Welcome and greet patients, members of the public and visitors to the Practice in an appropriate, friendly and courteous manner and advise of any delays
  • Maintaining and monitoring the Practice appointments system
  • Accurate recording of all patient-related information into the correct patient medical record including visits and over the reception desk conversations
  • Ensure medical records are kept to a good standard of presentation
  • Checking the Did Not Attend (DNA) appointments with doctors/nurses on the day, following up with the patient and document this on the consultation screen
  • Keeping the reception area, notice boards and leaflet dispensers tidy and free from obstructions
  • Handling samples presented by the patients appropriately and in line with the practice protocol
  • Taking delivery of items ordered by Practice members and storing in the correct location in a timely manner, observing health and safety rules
  • Welcome new patient registrations by providing appropriate documentation an information
  • Take payments from patients for service including travel vaccines, private medicals etc..
  • Handling of external and internal post as and when required
  • Administration duties such as coding hospital letters.
  • Any other duties that may be requested by the Doctors, Practice Nurses or the Practice Manager
