Job summary

Working under the direction of the Nursing Manager and as part of the practice multidisciplinary team, the Phlebotomist will be responsible for performing venepuncture, as requested by the clinical team, to the entitled patient population.

Key Responsibilities -

Clinical -

Obtaining patient consent for the collection of blood samples.

Performing venepuncture in accordance with practice protocols

Maintain accurate patient records in EMIS

To run independent routine phlebotomy clinics

Correct labelling and packing of clinical specimens

Ensuring samples are sent to the laboratory in a timely manner.

Maintain effective liaison with laboratory staff at both Royal Berkshire Hospital.

Work collaboratively with the nursing team, seeking guidance when necessary for patient related matters.

Checking the safe function of all venepuncture equipment

Main duties of the job

Communicate effectively with other team members, patients, and their carers, recognising the need for alternative methods of communication.

Organise and prioritise own workload and manage effectively, being adaptable to deal with emergency situations when needed.

Act always in a way to protect the confidentiality of patients and maintain the integrity of the patient/health carer relationship.

Demonstrate knowledge and apply principles of Information Governance.

Work effectively as a member of a team, maintaining a caring environment through the support of colleagues.

Always be aware of own limitations, working within scope of own competence.

  • Previous experience in phlebotomy or clinical laboratory (1+ year preferred).
  • Excellent manual dexterity and attention to detail.

Desirable

  • Experience in Primary Care.

Qualifications

  • Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training programme.

  • Driving licence preferred.
