Prescribing Clerk Join Our Friendly GP Practice Team

Are you organised, detail-oriented, and passionate about supporting patient care behind the scenes? We are looking for a dedicated Prescribing Clerk to join our busy and supportive GP surgery team.

This is a key role at the heart of our practice, helping ensure patients receive their medications safely, efficiently, and on time. You will work closely with GPs, pharmacists, and the wider clinical team tomanage prescription requests, liaise with community pharmacies, and support safe prescribing processes.

  • Processing repeat prescription requests accurately and within agreed timescales
  • Managing prescription queries from patients, pharmacies, and clinicians
  • Liaising with GPs, pharmacists, and the wider clinical team to support safe prescribing
  • Supporting medication reviews and ensuring prescribing protocols are followed
  • Maintaining accurate and up-to-date patient records
  • Monitoring prescribing workflows and escalating any issues appropriately
  • Contributing to the continuous improvement of prescribing processes within the practice

About the Organisation

Based at Amersham Health Centre, we are a large and well-established GP practice serving a growing population of over 14,500 patients. We have a strong and diverse clinical team made up of 3 GP partners and 9 salaried GPs, supported by an experienced nursing team and a well-developed administrative function.

We are part of the Mid Chiltern Primary Care Network, working collaboratively with neighbouring practices to deliver high-quality, joined-up care to our local community. Job Summary

The Prescribing Clerk plays a key administrative role in supporting the safe and efficient processing of prescriptions within the practice. Working closely with GPs, pharmacists, and the wider practice team, the post holder will ensure that repeat prescription requests are managed accurately, in line with practice protocols, and within agreed timescales.

The role is essential in maintaining high standards of patient care, minimising prescribing errors, and supporting effective medicines management across the practice.

Key Responsibilities

Prescription Processing

  • Process repeat prescription requests in a timely and accurate manner in accordance with practice protocols
  • Ensure all prescriptions are appropriately authorised by a clinician before issue
  • Manage electronic prescription requests via clinical systems and online services
  • Identify and highlight any discrepancies, queries, or potential medication issues to the appropriate clinician

Patient & Pharmacy Liaison

  • Respond to prescription queries from patients in a professional and timely manner
  • Liaise with local pharmacies regarding prescription requests, queries, and collection arrangements
  • Provide clear and accurate information to patients regarding prescription processes and timescales

Medicines Management Support

  • Support clinicians with medication reviews and recall systems where appropriate
  • Ensure prescribing aligns with local and national guidelines
  • Assist with monitoring high-risk medications and ensuring appropriate checks are in place

Administrative Duties

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records at all times
  • File, scan, and code relevant documentation relating to prescribing
  • Support the wider administrative team as required to ensure smooth practice operations

Governance & Safety

  • Work in line with practice policies, NHS guidelines, and confidentiality requirements
  • Adhere to data protection regulations and information governance standards
  • Report any prescribing errors, near misses, or safety concerns in line with practice procedures
