Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a new role for an experienced and highly motivated individual to join the One Life Primary Care Network (PCN) team in the town of Hartlepool. You will be an enthusiastic and self-motivated person who wishes to work collaboratively to influence patient care in this bespoke role.

We are looking for General Practice Assistants to join our already established Primary Care Network in Hartlepool.

Main duties of the job

General Practice Assistants (GPAs) form part of a multi-disciplinary team within primary care, and provide a support role, carrying out administrative tasks, combined in some areas with basic clinical duties, helping to free up GPs time and contribute to the smooth running of appointments, improving patients experience in the Practices.

As a newly established role, the post will be subject to development. In-house training and supervision will be available for qualified GPAs as required and in line with duties, responsibilities, and the national competency framework.

The successful candidate, if not already qualified, will be expected to enrol on the General Practice Assistant accredited training pathway.

Our forward-thinking Practices have 34,000 patients and have a range of Clinical Disciplines supporting the GP team, including Clinical Pharmacists, Social Prescribing Link Workers, Mental Health Practitioner, First Contact Practitioner and Care Co-Ordinator. Our PCN supports several training disciplines, including GP Registrars and Medical students and can offer a strong mentoring and training approach.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will report to the Practice Manager and the general practitioners (GP(s)) and support the GP(s) to ensure the efficient provision of medical services and clinics by performing several more routine administrative and clinical duties. This will allow the GP(s) to utilise their own time more effectively towards greater patient focused activities.

Additionally, this role will support both nursing and administrative teams in the delivery of clinical and administrative services, working as part of the practice multidisciplinary team, delivering care within their scope of practice to the entitled patient population.

Utilising the NHS Health Education England GPA Competency Framework, the post holder working within general practice/primary care will provide capabilities within care, administration, clinical, communications and health records management.

Essential

  • GCSE grade A to C in English and Maths

Desirable

  • Healthcare qualification (Level 3 or 4) or working towards gaining equivalent level
  • Phlebotomy certification
  • Vaccination certification
  • NVQ (Level 2 or 3) Business Administration

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working with the general public
  • Experience of working in a healthcare setting

Desirable

  • Experience of working in a primary care environment

Knowledge and Skills

Essential

  • Ability to perform venepuncture
  • An understanding of chaperone procedure
  • Ability to record accurate clinical notes
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral)
  • Strong IT skills
  • Clear, polite telephone manner
  • Effective time management (planning and organising)
  • Ability to work as a team member and autonomously
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Ability to follow clinical policy and procedure

  • Ability to carry out wound care/removal of sutures and staples
  • Ability to perform ECGs
