Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated GP Assistant to join our innovative and friendly team.

General Practice Assistants (GPAs) form part of a multi-disciplinary team within primary care, a support role combining basic clinical duties with administrative tasks helping to free up clinicians time and contribute to the smooth running of appointments, recall and immunisation, improving patients experience in the surgery.

Main duties of the job

  • Work flowing incoming clinical correspondence and prioritising for the clinical team in terms of actions and signposting some post to others such as clinical pharmacist etc.
  • Extracting all information from clinical correspondence that needs coding and adding to notes supporting QOF and IIF Reviews
  • Support health campaigns and patient recall across QoF, IFF, Long Term Conditions and Immunisations
  • Arranging appointments, referrals, tests and follow up appointments of patients
  • Assist the practice with the call and recall for patient health reviews.
  • Act as a chaperone as required

  • Dipping urine & phlebotomy

  • Carry out baseline observations such as pulse oximetry, blood pressure, temperature, pulse rate, BMI, recording all findings accurately
  • Undertake patient health checks and deliver health promotion advice
  • Support clinicians with immunisations/wound care
  • Completing basic (non-opinion) forms and core elements of some forms for the clinicians to approve and sign such as insurance forms, mortgage, benefits agency forms etc
  • Process requests for information i.e. SAR, insurance / solicitors letters and DVLA forms
  • Explaining treatment procedures to patients
  • Work with High Intensity Users of practice services to signpost and manage interaction
  • Post holder must hold a GP Assistant Certificate qualification or be willing to embark on the 6-9 month training programme.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The following are the core responsibilities of the medical assistant. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will depend on factors such as workload and staffing levels.

a. Undertake patient health checks and deliver health promotion advice.

b. Carry out baseline observations such as pulse oximetry, blood pressure, temperature, pulse rate, BMI, recording all findings accurately

c. Act as a chaperone as required

d. When trained, undertake venepuncture

e. When trained, administer specific vaccinations (i.e. flu/covid 19)

f. Ensure specimens are labled, recorded and ready for onward transportation

g. Provide support during minor operations

h. Ensure all clinical rooms are adequately stocked and prepared for each session

i. Ensure fridges are cleaned routinely in accordance with guidance

j. Assist in the maintenance of the cold chain for the vaccination fridge.

k. Maintain regular checks of emergency equipment

l. Ensure clinical waste such as sharps bins are replaced in accordance with the practice IPC policy

m. Deliver opportunistic health promotion where appropriate

n. Support the practice nurse in delivering health promotion programmes

o. Assist with remote patient reviews and the updating of patient records.

p. Assist the practice with the call and recall for patient health reviews.

q. Prepare administration to be completed by GPs (e.g. insurance documentation), recording all necessary information on the clinical system.

r. Assist with general practice administration inclusive of:

Identifying relevant clinical information documented in patient correspondence, coding appropriately per agreed protocol (supported by lead GP) and completing any detailed actions

Typing letters, reports and associated documentation as required

Liaising with external agencies such as hospitals and community services, ensuring referrals are processed efficiently using ERS

File and store records as required (via EMIS Web and Docman)

Photocopy documentation as required

Scanning of patient related documentation and attaching scanned documents to patients healthcare records

Process requests for information i.e. SAR, insurance / solicitors letters and DVLA forms (manually and via iGPR)

Process incoming e-test results, ensuring they are referred to the relevant clinician
