Job summary

The Phlebotomist will play a key role in the provision of high-quality patient care by collecting routine and urgent venous blood samples within a busy GP practice. Jesmond Health Partnership is located over 4 sites and you may be required to work across all sites.

Main duties of the job

    • Within the GP practice perform venepuncture to collect routine and urgent blood samples from registered patients.
    • Collect blood samples based on requests from a clinician or as part of annual reviews ensuring adherence to safety and infection control procedures.
  • Specimen Handling:
    • Label and store specimens correctly for safe and timely transfer to laboratory services.
    • Follow the correct procedures for the handling, documentation, and transportation of blood samples.

Position: Full or Part-Time Phlebotomist Reports to: Lead Nurse Salary: FT £ 22,383

Job Summary:

The Phlebotomist will play a key role in the provision of high-quality patient care by collecting routine and urgent venous blood samples. The successful candidate will adhere to infection control policies and ensure that all samples are collected, stored, and processed in line with the practice standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Blood Collection:
    • Perform venepuncture to collect routine and urgent blood samples from patients attending the practice.
    • Collect blood samples based on requests from a clinician, ensuring adherence to safety and infection control procedures.
  • Specimen Handling:
    • Label and store specimens correctly for safe and timely transfer to laboratory services.
    • Follow the correct procedures for the handling, documentation, and transportation of blood samples.
  • Patient Care:
    • Deliver a high standard of customer care, ensuring privacy, dignity, and cultural diversity are respected at all times.
    • Address patient concerns, provide reassurance, and answer questions to ensure they feel comfortable during the procedure.
  • Team Collaboration:
    • Work closely with GPs, nurses, and administrative staff to ensure a smooth and efficient patient flow.
    • Provide assistance and guidance to junior members of the phlebotomy team and contribute to the training of learners in similar roles.
  • Governance and Compliance:
    • Adhere to all relevant NHS and GP practice policies, including infection control, confidentiality, and health and safety regulations.
    • Assist in maintaining a safe and clean environment, ensuring compliance with CQC standards.
  • Stock and Equipment Management:
    • Monitor phlebotomy supplies and report / address any stock requirements.
    • Ensure all equipment is in proper working order and participate in stock rotation.
  • Continuous Improvement:
    • Attend all mandatory training and keep up-to-date with best practices in phlebotomy.
    • Participate in annual appraisals, engaging in personal development plans and continuous improvement.

Scope:The GP practice operates across multiple sites and this position may involve rotation between practice sites.

Requirements:

  • Experience and Qualifications:
    • Previous experience in phlebotomy is desirable but not essential; full training will be provided for the right candidate.
    • Experience working in a GP surgery, healthcare environment, or NHS setting is advantageous.
  • Skills and Attributes:
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to work independently and within a team.
    • Strong attention to detail and organisational skills.
    • Compassionate and patient centred approach.

Governance and Health & Safety:

  • Adhere to practice policies including the Health and Safety at Work Act, Data Protection Act, and infection control policies.
  • Follow the practice uniform policy and act professionally in all interactions.
  • Safeguard patient confidentiality and apply relevant procedures for handling personal data.
