Job summary

Working under the direct supervision of the HCA and Nurse teams and strictly in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols, the post-holder will be responsible for performing venepuncture and near patient testing to obtain blood samples from patients as directed by other members of the clinical team.

This role will be a working day of 8am-4pm over 5 days. You will work across all 3 of our sites, Leap Valley, Downend, Emersons Green Medical Centre and Abbotswood in Yate.

Main duties of the job

  • Ensuring that the patient is as comfortable and relaxed as possible and confirming their consent to the collection of a blood sample
  • Collection of sample(s) of blood in accordance with training and procedures
  • Ensuring samples are stored in appropriate containers
  • Accurate, legible labelling of all samples to confirm patient identity using clinical systems.
  • Checking patient identification against clinician request and confirming with patient whenever possible
  • Recording collection of blood sample in patient record in accordance with practice procedure
  • Ensuring that samples are dispatched to the appropriate laboratories in a timely fashion.
  • Ensuring that anomalies are reported to a senior member of staff
  • Notifying the appropriate clinician of any significant patient issues
  • Liaising with and assisting members of the administrative team
  • Prepare and maintain environments and equipment before, during and after patient care interventions
  • Assist in raising awareness of health and well-being, where appropriate
  • Give accurate and appropriate information to patients and groups within own competence
  • To gain the underpinning knowledge and practical skills to administer basic life support if necessary
  • Chaperone and assist patients where appropriate according to practice policy
  • Support the HCA and Nurse team for various tasks if and when required.
