Job summary

West Meon Surgery is a small rural practice set in the South Downs with a small and highly dedicated team looking after our patients. We are looking for a new Practice Nurse to join us to replace our last nurse who has been a key member of the team for well over 10 years.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will lead on the provision of nursing services to our population including chronic disease management and the provision of general nursing duties . As we are rural, our patients expect that we provide a full service which can on occasion include walk-in urgent treatment such as stitches, dressings or more serious situations.

We are just 11 members of the team supporting our Partners. With only 2750 patients, we are lucky to be able to provide a very personal, doctor lead, service. Everyone enjoys at least 1 day off each week to ensure there is a work-life balance. We are super-friendly and enjoy a relaxed work environment.

Job responsibilities

The main duties of our Practice Nurse are:

  • Advising patients on general health care and minor ailments with referral to GPs as necessary
  • Provide a nursing service covering cervical cytology, contraceptive advice, wound care, removal of sutures/clips, care of leg ulcers, doppler and ECG testing, New patient checks, NHS Healthchecks, routing childhood and adult immunisations, and travel advice and immunisation
  • Supporting the Practices management of all patients with long term diseases but specifically leading on Diabetes, including initiation of insulin
  • Practice IPC Lead, ensuring all infection control measures are met and reporting any problems to the Practice Manager
  • Maintaining a high professional standard of nursing care and keeping up to date with all aspects of nursing care relevant to the post
  • Maintaining a written professional development plan and an up-to-date portfolio which meets with requirements for registration with the Nursing & Midwifery Council
  • Attending courses and study days necessary for professional development
  • Participating in training in basic life-support skills in accordance with Practice guidelines
  • Participating in annual appraisal meetings
  • Maintaining familiarity with safeguarding procedures for children and vulnerable adults
  • Attending and participating in Practice meetings when required to contribute to the effectiveness of the team
  • Maintaining the standards of tidiness and cleanliness of the Treatment Rooms
  • Assisting the Practice Manager in ensuring equipment is maintained and routinely serviced
  • Maintaining and rotating stock items in clinical rooms, and leading a suite of checks on emergency bags, vaccine and fridge stocks, fridge temperatures

  • Demonstrate knowledge and experience in QOF and associated skills, including traditional treatment room tasks (e.g., child/adult immunisations, travel vaccinations, cervical cytology, dressings, wound care, family planning, and BP monitoring).
  • Be experienced in the management of long-term conditions.
  • Be innovative, enthusiastic, and caring, with a strong commitment to patient-centered care.
  • Participate in clinical and peer support meetings.
