Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a phlebotomist to join our friendly supportive team. We are a dynamic, enthusiastic training practice, passionate about staff development and an active member of Grand Union PCN.

We are looking for someone who is experienced in taking blood who would like to progress to other treatment room services usually provided by a HealthCare Assistant.

The position is part time and we can be flexible with start times to assist with outside committments such as childcare

Main duties of the job

  • Ensuring that the patient is as comfortable and relaxed as possible and confirming their agreement to the collection of a blood sample
  • Collection of sample(s)s of blood in accordance with training and procedures
  • Ensuring samples are stored in appropriate containers
  • Accurate, legible labelling of all samples to confirm patient identity
  • Checking patient identification against GP/Nurse request and confirming with patient whenever possible
  • Recording collection of blood sample in patient record in accordance with practice procedure
  • Ensuring that samples are dispatched to the appropriate laboratories in a timely fashion.
  • Ensuring that anomalies are reported to a senior member of staff
  • Notifying the GP/Nurse of any significant patient issues
  • Liaising with and assisting members of the administrative team

Health care duties will be discussed with appropriate candidates.

About us

Baldwins Lane Surgery is a small surgery in Croxley Green. Our clinical team consists of 2GP partners, 1 salaried GP, Clinical Pharmacist, HCA/phlebotomist, Practice nurse who are supported by a friendly team of reception and admin staff.

We work hard however staff wellbeing is paramount - the partners engender a great team spirit amongst the staff and emphasise a good work life balance is maintained in the team.

Job responsibilities

Phlebotomist duties

  • Ensuring that the patient is as comfortable and relaxed as possible and confirming their agreement to the collection of a blood sample
  • Collection of sample(s)s of blood in accordance with training and procedures
  • Ensuring samples are stored in appropriate containers
  • Accurate, legible labelling of all samples to confirm patient identity

Health Care Duties

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • New patient registration checks, including completing any necessary paperwork and making any necessary claims to the Health Authority and referrals within the Practice
  • Ascertain and document smoking/alcohol history
  • Ascertain Family History
  • BP monitoring
  • Booking appointments for and application and removal of 24 hour BP monitoring
  • Urinalysis of protein and sugar
  • Use of glucometer
  • Phlebotomy
  • Understanding of Infection control and sharps policy
  • Hearing check by Audiometry
  • Provide lifestyle advice to patients making any necessary referrals within the Practice
  • Weight monitoring
  • Ensure specimens are labelled and bagged ready for collection with the necessary paperwork completed
  • Ensure clinical waste collection runs smoothly, reporting any problems to the Practice Manager
  • Ensure sharps bins are ready for collection
  • Taking ECGs as requested by GPs
  • Simple wound dressing
  • Ordering clinical supplies

Administration and professional responsibilities

Participate in the administrative and professional responsibilities of the practice team

Ensure accurate and legible notes of all consultations and treatments are recorded in the patients notes

Ensure the clinical computer system is kept up to date with accurate details recorded

Ensure accurate completion of all necessary documentation associated with patient health care and registration with the practice

Ensure collection and maintenance of statistical information required for regular and ad hoc reports

Attend and participate in practice meetings as required

Assist in formulation of practice philosophy, strategy and policy

To assist in seasonal and special projects as requested e.g. flu campaign

Any other delegated duties considered appropriate to the post that may be agreed from time to time.
