Job summary

Mile Oak Medical Centre based in Portslade is seeking a part-time Practice Nurse to join our team. We can offer up to 30 hours per week, which ideally include working Monday and Friday.

The role of Practice Nurse is varied, and you will draw on your skills to ensure each patient received the high quality of care they deserve. The role will involve assessment, diagnosis, treatment and referral of patients and includes face-to-face, telephone and home visit appointments.

We are a training practice and support our staff in their professional development.

You will be a qualified nurse ideally with some experience of working in general practice. A team player and able to prioritise your workload. The role will have a mix of face-to-face and telephone appointments and reviews and competing priorities, so the ability to remain calm under pressure is essential.

Experience in chronic disease management & reviews, wound care and immunisations preferable.

Main duties of the job

You will assist medical personnel in the care of Practice patients to include treatment, preventative care, screening and patient education.

Mile Oak Medical Centre is a busy GP Practice based in Mile Oak, Portslade providing quality healthcare to approx. 8500 patients.

We are a training practice, have 5 GP Partners and 5 Salaried GPs and are part of the West Hove PCN.

We have a team of 35, working across clinical, administrative and managerial functions and offer friendly and supportive workplace.

Job responsibilities

Working as part of the nursing team some or all of the following may apply but duties may be varied from time to time under the direction of the Partners/Practice Manager, dependent on current and evolving Practice workload and staffing levels:

  • Assist in and perform routine tasks related to patient care as directed by senior nursing staff and GPs
  • Cytology
  • Wound care / ulcer care/Doppler
  • Removal of Sutures
  • New Patient Medicals/Urinalysis
  • Travel Clinic
  • ECGs
  • Asthma/Peak Flow Readings/Spirometry
  • Venepuncture
  • Hypertension Management
  • Ear syringing
  • Routine immunisations/Childhood immunisations
  • Chaperoning and assisting patients where appropriate who are being examined by another clinician
  • Assisting GPs with minor surgery and coil fittings
  • Requesting pathology tests, for example urine culture, swabs
  • Interest in Diabetes, Coronary Heart Disease, Respiratory Disease and Contraception.
  • Responsibility for any allocated QoF areas such as Learning Disability and SMI reviews
  • Following agreed clinical protocols with referral to senior nurse or GPs as appropriate
  • Other tasks may include:
  • Maintaining equipment used by the nurses and GPs
  • Maintain general tidiness and cleanliness of nurses and treatment rooms
  • Maintain stock of waiting room leaflets as instructed by partners and Practice Manager
  • Ordering of Health Promotion Literature
  • Ordering of vaccinations to maintain stock levels
  • Participation in administrative systems in the Practice
  • At all times there will be a need to maintain accurate records
  • A duty to advise senior nurse/Partners of potential problems or errors within the range of assigned tasks
  • Attend and participate in any Practice meetings when required.
  • On occasion there may be a requirement to undertake home visits
  • Any other delegated duties appropriate to the post
