The Westbank Practice is seeking an enthusiastic, innovative, and experienced Healthcare Assistant to join our friendly and supportive team.

  • Hours: Between 25 - 35 hours per week

Main duties of the job

To support the practice nursing team in the delivery of nursing services, working as part of the practice multidisciplinary team, delivering care within their scope of practice to the entitled patient population. The healthcare assistant will deliver and assist clinical staff in the provision of treatment, preventative care, health promotion and patient education.

About us

We are a busy, growing GP practice caring for approximately 9,000 patients across our Exminster and Starcross surgeries. As a teaching practice, we support GP Registrars, F2 doctors, and Medical Students on rotation.

Our multidisciplinary clinical team includes:

  • 5 GP Partners
  • 2 Salaried GPs
  • 2 Paramedics
  • 3 Practice Nurses
  • 1 Healthcare Assistant
  • 1 Phlebotomist

Beautifully located on the outskirts of Exeter, we are looking for a dynamic nurse who can work autonomously and contribute positively to our expanding patient population.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The following are the core responsibilities of the healthcare assistant (this list is not exhaustive, and some roles and responsibilities may not be dealt with by all members of the team). There may be on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:

a.Support the practice nurse with health promotion programmes

b.Carry out baseline observations such as pulse oximitery, blood pressure, temperature, pulse rate, recording findings accurately

c.Facilitate routine and 24-hour BP monitoring, advising patients accordingly

d.Undertake wound care, dressings and other clinical tasks as required

e.Support the practice nurse with the management of chronic disease clinics

f.Carry out BMI checks as directed

g.Act as a chaperone as required

h.When trained, undertake venepuncture

i.When trained, administer flu vaccinations

j.Carry out ECGs as requested

k.Ensure specimens are recorded and ready for onward transportation

l.Provide support during minor operations as required

m.Ensure all clinical rooms are adequately stocked and prepared for each session

n.Ensure fridges are cleaned routinely in accordance with extant guidance

o.Ensure clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the practice IPC policy

p.Deliver opportunistic health promotion where appropriate

q.Administration of B12 and Pneumovax under PSD, according to protocol. Updated yearly with Lead Nurse.
