Job summary
The
Health Care Assistant (HCA) plays a vital role in supporting the nursing team
and wider clinical team within the General Practice. Working under the
supervision of the Clinical Nurse Lead, Practice Nurses, and/or GPs, the HCA
will deliver high-quality, patient-centred care. Duties will be carried out in
the surgery setting, as well as in patients' homes and care/nursing home
environments where required.

- Assisting GPs and Practice Nurses with clinical procedures and minor surgery
- Basic wound care and dressing application
- Suture and clip removal
- Vaccinations under a Patient Specific Direction (PSD)
- Diabetic Health Checks (routine reviews, foot checks, basic health monitoring)

Clinical Support
Under appropriate supervision and training, the HCA will undertake the following clinical duties:
- Venepuncture
- New Patient and NHS Health Checks
- Blood Pressure Recording and Monitoring
- Hypertension Reviews

- Height and Weight Recording
- ECG Recording
- Capillary Blood Glucose Testing

Administrative Duties
- Accurate and timely recording of all patient interactions and procedures on the clinical system.
- Supporting the nursing team with recall systems and health promotion activities.
- Ensuring clinical areas are clean, stocked, and compliant with infection control standards.
Communication
- Maintain clear and effective communication with patients, colleagues, and external services.
- Respect patient confidentiality and dignity at all times.
- Provide patients with relevant information under supervision or direction.
Training and Professional Development
- Undertake all mandatory training and updates as required.
- Participate in annual appraisal and personal development planning.
- Attend team meetings, clinical supervision sessions, and educational events where appropriate.
Other Responsibilities
- Act in accordance with the policies and procedures of the practice, including those related to infection control, safeguarding, and confidentiality.
- Adhere to the relevant Code of Conduct for Health Care Support Workers.
- Undertake any other reasonable duties commensurate with the role as requested by the Clinical Nurse Lead or GPs.
