Main duties of the job

We are seeking a skilled Phlebotomist to join our dedicated clinical team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the safe and effective collection of blood and urine samples from patients of all ages. Youll play an essential role in patient care by ensuring accurate identification, appropriate venepuncture techniques, and timely sample processing.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prioritise daily phlebotomy requests based on clinical urgency and rota booking.

  • Identify patients accurately and reassure them throughout the procedure

  • Perform venepuncture using safe, sterile techniques

  • Ensure quality and correct labelling of all samples

  • Follow protocols for urine dipping and sample handling

  • Record and manage data using SystmOne

  • Answer basic patient queries and signpost where appropriate

  • Maintain high standards of infection control and health & safety

The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting the clinical team by collecting blood and urine specimens, ensuring patient comfort and safety, and helping maintain accurate medical records. Main Responsibilities
  • Prioritise and plan daily activities based on the urgency of sample requests and rotas.

  • Accurately identify patients and confirm personal details using approved documentation.

  • Determine the appropriate phlebotomy method (e.g. venepuncture, skin puncture) based on patient age, health, and condition.

  • Reassure patients, help them relax, and ensure a positive and comfortable experience.

  • Locate suitable veins and collect samples using sterile techniques and equipment.

  • Label all samples correctly and deliver them promptly for testing.

  • Perform urine dipstick testing in line with protocol.

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records on clinical systems (SystmOne).

  • Respond to patient queries in a professional manner and provide appropriate signposting.

  • Adhere to infection control procedures, health and safety regulations, and confidentiality policies at all times.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Diploma in Phlebotomy or evidence of 12 months' on-the-job training.
