Abbey Medical Practice is looking to recruit a Healthcare Assistant to support our strong clinical team consisting of GPs, ANPs, Practice Nurses, Nursing Associates, Pharmacists, Physios and trainees.

We are looking for an enthusiastic candidate who is willing to learn and progress on the job, undertaking the relevant training to grow into the role and become an excellent addition to our team.

Main duties of the job

The post holder's main duties will be phlebotomy, taking basic clinical observations such as Blood Pressure, with ECGs being an advantage, however training would be given to the right candidate.

They must have the Care Certificate or a willingness to work towards this to be able to take this role on.

The chosen candidate will take responsibility for their own development, learning and performance, and identify gaps in knowledge and skills. They must participate in an annual individual performance review including maintaining a record of their own personal and professional development.

As well as the skills specific training, maintaining regular updating will also be required.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The following are the core responsibilities of the Healthcare Assistant. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:

a. Undertake new patient health checks

b. Support the Practice Nurse with health promotion programmes

c. Carry out baseline observations such as pulse oximitery, blood pressure, temperature and pulse rate, recording findings accurately

d. Facilitate routine and 24-hour BP monitoring, advising patients accordingly

e. Undertake wound care, dressings and other clinical tasks as required

f. Carry out BMI checks as directed

g. Act as a chaperone as required

h. When trained, undertake venepuncture

i. When trained, administer flu vaccinations

j. Carry out ECGs as requested

k. Ensure specimens are recorded and ready for onward transportation

l. Provide support during minor operations as required

m. Ensure all clinical rooms are adequately stocked and prepared for each session

n. Ensure fridges are cleaned routinely in accordance with extant guidance

o. Ensure clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the organisations IPC policy

p. Deliver opportunistic health promotion where appropriate

q. Any other designated tasks which become apparent for the needs of the Practice

In addition to the primary responsibilities, the Healthcare Assistant may be requested to:

a. Participate in practice audit as directed by the audit lead

b. Participate in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care

c. Support and participate in shared learning within the organisation

d. Complete opening and closing procedures in accordance with the duty rota
