Job summary
The Drayton Surgery is looking for an experienced HCA/HCSW to join it's friendly team in North Portsmouth.
Working under the direct supervision of the Nurse Manager with support from the wider Nursing team, and strictly in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols, the post-holder will be responsible for performing various tasks to support the on-going health maintenance of our patient base. This includes but is not limited to:
- venepuncture for both routine and urgent bloods
- Respiratory and/or diabetic support
- ECGs
- Various vaccination injections i.e. Seasonal influenza, Pneumococcal, Vitamin B12
- NHS Healthchecks
- Wound dressings
This position is for 30 hours per week, on the following working pattern:
Monday 14.00 - 20.00
Tuesday 12.30 - 17.30
Wednesday 07.30 - 16.00
Thursday 12.30 - 17.30
Friday 07.30 - 13.30

Main duties of the job
Responsibilities will include:
- Phlebotomy
- Perform ECGs and ensure that they have been analysed by a GP
- Carrying out blood pressure, height & weight checks
- Assist in minor operations, coil fittings & other clinics
- Advise patients on health care, minor ailments, health promotion & illness prevention
- To provide first-line Diabetic clinics or Respiratory clinics
- Basic wound care and suture/clip removal
- To undertake NHS Health checks
- To administer flu, pneumonia, and B12 injections having been adequately trained
- Stock control and ordering of drugs and medical supplies
- Ensure that fridge temperatures are regularly monitored
- Maintain high standards of tidiness, hygiene and safety in the use of all equipment and areas of work, in line with the Practice Health and Safety policy, Infection Control Policy as well as all other Practice policies and procedures
- To undertake any additional duties as may from time to time be deemed necessary, including working across sites
- To liaise with and communicate effectively with other members of the Primary Health Care Team
- To attend course and study days as required or thought necessary to maintain high standards and to record these as part of continuing professional development. (These may be in the evenings and weekends).

The Drayton Surgery has a broad patient demographic of circa 24,200 patients across 2 sites; 1 partner-owned purpose built building in Drayton, and 1 rented branch surgery in Cosham. We are well established within the Portsmouth North PCN with both the Clinical Director and Business Manager making up part of our team.
We are a group of 6 partners, 8 salaried GPs, 1 retained GP, 10 Nurse Practitioners seeing on the day patients, 8 General Practice Nurses and 6 HCAs, involved in the care of chronic diseases. On top of that we have a dedicated Prescribing team including Clinical Pharmacists.
