Job summary

St John's Medical Centre seeks an experienced, enthusiastic Healthcare Assistant to join our friendly and supportive team.

We are looking to complement out nursing team with another Healthcare Assistant working 30 hours per week with flexibility to provide cover in the event of annual leave/ sickness. Hours/ days of work are negotiable. The Practice is open Monday-Friday between the hours of 08:00am-18:30pm, we also offer an Extended Hours clinic on a Monday evening between the hours of 18:30pm-20:00pm.

Main duties of the job

Main duties of the HCA will include:

  • Carrying out baseline observations such as pulse oximetry, blood pressure, temperature, pulse rate and record findings accurately
  • Facilitate routine and 24-hour BP monitoring
  • Undertake wound care, dressings and other clinical tasks
  • Carry out BMI checks (weight/ height) and recording these accurately.
  • Act as a chaperone when required
  • Undertake phlebotomy for adults and some children as appropriate to training, experience and competency and send to the laboratory
  • Administer both adult flu vaccines and children's nasal flu under relevant PSD
  • Removal of suture and clips
  • Carrying out Urine testing
  • Administer B12/ Pneumonia/ Shingles vaccinations
  • Carry out ECGs/24-hour ECGs ensuring results are available for GP
  • Conduct home visits for housebound patients
  • Opportunistic health promotion where appropriate, including smoking, weight management and exercise programmes.
  • Carry out INR testing, if had relevant training
  • Deliver opportunistic health promotion where appropriate
  • Ensure specimens are recorded accurately and ready for onward transportation and on occasion take samples to pathology at Grantham Hospital
  • Provide support during minor operations/ gynaecology clinics as required
  • Ensure all clinical rooms are adequately stocked and prepared for each session
  • Ensure fridges are cleaned routinely in accordance with extant guidance
  • Ensure clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the IPC policy

St John's Medical Centre is a well established Practice located in Grantham with circa 13,000 patients registered. We are a Training Practice and regularly welcome GP Registrars, medical students and host nursing placements. We were rated Good in our last CQC inspection.

To assist in providing cover for HUB shifts when required.

To ensure the correct use of medical equipment, ensuring any problems are reported and requesting training when needed.

Take on responsibilities as delegated by the Nurse Lead, these may include but are not limited to; Health & Safety tasks, stock checks, checking and reviewing of medical equipment in rooms, ordering and maintaining stocks of drugs and supplies and any other appropriate tasks.

Personal Development

To understand own responsibilities and accountability on the delivery of care.

To participate in Clinical Governance activities and engage with educational opportunities.

To participate in the planning an implementation of change within own area of responsibility.
