Job summary

The University of Nottingham Health Service require a highly motivated Health Care Assistant / Phlebotomist to join our experienced and dedicated team at Cripps Health Centre.

Previous experience essential. Including experience in Phlebotomy.

This position is for 22.5 hours per week Wednesday - Friday. Please note, unfortunately due to space restraints there is no other options for working days.

Main duties of the job

Working under the direct supervision of the Nurse Manager and the practice nursing team, and strictly in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols, the health care assistant will assist the practice clinical team in the provision and delivery of prescribed programmes of patient care:

  • Providing support to the practice nursing team to enable them to function effectively.
  • Working within a team, meeting the needs of the patients, and being able to work in a changing environment.
  • Collecting venous blood samples from patients as required by the medical staff for laboratory investigations.
  • Assisting in minor operations / procedures
  • Wound care / dressings
  • Providing care to patients according to, and by following, practice approved protocols.

Duties and responsibilities:

The core element of this role is Phlebotomy for which previous experience is essential.

Other roles may include:

Chaperoning duties

Processing and management of laboratory samples requested by GPs/nurses

Cleaning and re-stocking GP consulting rooms

Preparing and maintaining environments and equipment before, during and after patient care interventions including assisting GPs during the performance of minor operations

Assisting in the assessment and surveillance of patients health and well-being

Undertaking specific clinical activities for named patients that have been delegated and taught specifically in relation to that individual

Wound care management and dressing changes in liaison with nursing team, once trained

Helping to raise awareness of health and well-being and how it can be promoted

Assisting with the collection and collation of data on needs related to health and well-being

Take and record blood pressures and 24 hour blood pressure monitoring using protocols as requested by doctors or nurses

Dip stick urine and perform urinary pregnancy testing

Check height and weight of patients

To perform any other tasks, considered appropriate to the role, within the skills of the post holder.
