Job summary

An exciting opportunity to join our team has arisen for an enthusiastic experienced Health Care Assistant to join our highly motivated team at Harewood.We are a rapidly expanding practice committed to providing an excellent service to our patient population and have strong working relationship with the military veterans and military families in our area.

The job role is to support the clinical team in performing general healthcare assistant duties including phlebotomy, ECG, BP readings and assisting in minor surgery and the processing of clinical samples.

Main duties of the job

1. To collect blood samples as requested by medical staff from patients by venepuncture to enable appropriate tests to be carried out.

2. To ensure all protocols for handling, labelling and documenting specimens are adhered to.

3. To ensure delivery of specimens to appropriate laboratories.

4. To enter details as required on to Practice patient records system. System One.

5. To take ECG readings when requested (following adequate training and adhering to Practice protocols).

6. To support the Practice minor injuries and wound care services by applying dressings where clinically appropriate (following adequate training and adhering to Practice protocols).

7. To restock and reorder items required for the clinical rooms

Our practice is run by Heartbeat Primary Care, a Community Interest Company which also supports 21 GP practices across Hambleton and Richmondshire.

We are a PMS practice with a list size of 8,400 patients based in Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire.

JOB DESCRIPTION HEALTHCARE ASSISTANT

Job Purpose: To support the clinical team performing general healthcare assistant duties including collecting blood samples from patients by venepuncture ensuring patient and personal safety through adherence to Practice Protocols, Policies and Procedures and relevant Health and Safety legislation at all times.

Detailed Job Description: The specific duties involved in this post include the following:-

1. To reduce pressure on medical and nursing staff by providing a supporting healthcare assistant role.

2. To collect blood samples as requested by medical staff from patients by venepuncture to enable appropriate tests to be carried out.

3. To ensure all protocols for handling, labelling and documenting specimens are adhered to.

4. To ensure delivery of specimens to appropriate laboratories.

5. To enter details as required on to Practice patient records system.

6. To take ECG readings when requested (following adequate training and adhering to Practice protocols).

7. To support the Practice minor injuries and wound care services by applying dressings where clinically appropriate (following adequate training and adhering to Practice protocols).

8. To support the Practice diabetic management service by carrying out foot-checks and other routine check-ups for the Practices diabetic patients (following adequate training and adhering to Practice protocols).

9. To adhere to policies relating to the handling of contaminated blood and infection control to ensure safety of both patients and staff.

10. To follow procedures for reporting incidents of patients and staff, with particular reference to needlestick injuries.

11. Responsibility for ensuring phlebotomy equipment is kept in a clean and safe manner.

12. From time-to-time act as a chaperone for the Practices patients;

13. To ensure compliance with relevant Health and Safety legislation and Practice policies and procedures at all times.

14. Maintain patient and Practice confidentiality at all times, only releasing confidential information when authorised to do so to those acting in an official capacity

In addition to the above you may be asked to undertake other reasonable tasks at the request of the Business Operations Manager, the Lead Nurse or other senior members of staff and the Management Team, but the above is a general guide to the duties involved in the post.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Qualified to NVQ level 3 in health and Social Care or have equivalent experience

Desirable

  • Qualified in Phlebotomy
  • Qualified in vaccinations for HCA's
  • Experience in undertaking ECG's, Wound Care, clinical specimen collection, BP taking
