The position is for 29.5 hours per week.
The working pattern is: Monday 08:30 - 17:00, Tuesday 08:30 - 17:00, Wednesday 08:30 - 17:00, Thursday 13:00 - 17:00.
We are seeking a caring and enthusiastic Healthcare Assistant (HCA) to join our friendly Practice team of healthcare professionals. In this role, you will assist our clinicians in the care of our patients, including treatment, preventative care, screening and patient education. You will work under the direct supervision of the Lead Practice Nurse and strictly in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols. The post will also include some administrative duties.
The ideal candidate will need to be friendly, confident, methodical and efficient with excellent communication skills, a strong sense of empathy and resilience. The successful candidate must be able to work on their own initiative and have good time management skills.
Experience working as a Healthcare Assistant, would be beneficial. Full training will be given to the successful candidate.

Main duties of the job
The role includes, but is not limited to, the following:
- Perform venepuncture for patients and phlebotomy clinics.
- Undertake baseline observations - BP / Pulse / Temperature as required on templates and assist with long term condition monitoring.
- Organise/fit equipment for 24-hour BP & ECG recording for patients.
- Undertake basic wound care / dressings and to refer patients to trained nursing colleagues where necessary for review.
- Perform B12 / Flu / Pneumonia / Shingles injections this list is not exhaustive, working to PSD and under the instruction of trained nursing colleagues.
- Assist in seasonal and special projects as required e.g. flu and pneumonia campaigns.
- Ensure that specimens brought in by patients, or taken by doctors or nurses, are tested, and recorded appropriately, or ready for collection by pathology service.
- Assist in the assessment, surveillance, promotion and collection of data of patients health and well-being.
- Chaperoning duties.
- Ensure clinical areas, couches, fridges and work environments are kept clean.

Burdwood Surgery is a town practice located in the centre of Thatcham. We are a list holding practice with a list size of around 10,300 patients. We are part of the Kennet PCN, working closely with Thatcham Medical Practice and Falkland Surgery.

The following are core responsibilities:

- Assist GP in providing minor surgery sessions.
- Assist in the assessment, surveillance, promotion and collection of data for patients health and wellbeing.
- Ensure that specimens brought in by patients or taken by clinicians, are tested, and recorded appropriately, or ready for collection by the pathology service.
- Chaperoning duties.
- Ensure clinical areas, couches, fridges and work environments are clean.
- Ensure full sharps bins are removed from room and safely stored ready for collection.
- Additional administrative duties including restocking rooms and ordering supplies, where appropriate.
- Checking calibration due dates for equipment.
- Maintain accurate and timely records, ensuring you are compliant with the practices IT system.
