Job summary

Phlebotomy skills and experience are essential, and you'll play a key part in delivering high-quality care to our community of approximately 7,000 patients. You'll be working alongside our established nursing and healthcare assistant team as part of a wider clinical team committed to excellence in patient care.

Main duties of the job

  • Venepuncture: Perform blood collection from patients of all ages using correct techniques and protocols, ensuring patient safety and comfort.

  • Sample Handling: Correctly label, package, and prepare blood samples for transport to the laboratory in accordance with practice and NHS guidelines.

  • Patient Identification & Record Keeping: Ensure accurate patient identification and maintain thorough documentation of procedures and samples collected within the clinical system EMIS.

  • Infection Control: Follow strict hygiene, infection prevention, and control protocols before, during, and after each procedure.

  • Patient Interaction: Provide a calm, reassuring presence for patients who may be anxious or nervous, especially those with a fear of needles.

  • Teamwork: Work collaboratively with GPs, nurses, HCAs, and admin staff to support the efficient delivery of patient care.

  • Confidentiality & GDPR: Maintain strict patient confidentiality and adhere to data protection regulations at all times.

  • Clinical System Use: Enter relevant data and results into the patient record and ensure appropriate follow-up actions are flagged or undertaken.

  • Support Clinics: Occasionally assist with other clinical tasks during clinics, if appropriately trained and required.

  • Adherence to Protocols: Comply with all practice policies, procedures, and health and safety guidelines.

Job responsibilities

The successful applicant will work 7 hours per day, 3 days a week on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday. An average working day would be

- 08:30 - 12:30 Clinic

- 12:30 - 13:00 Lunch

- 13:00 - 16:00 Clinic

Key Responsibilities:

  • Accurately label and prepare blood samples for transport to the laboratory.

  • Ensure all procedures are documented correctly using clinical IT systems.

  • Adhere to infection control, health & safety, and confidentiality policies at all times.
