Job summary

Due to expansion of our on the day team, we seek a part-time minor illness prescriber to assist with the management of minor illness cases in patients of all ages, small children through to late adulthood.

Main duties of the job

Forming part of the daily duty team, the management of minor illness cases in patients of all ages, small children through to late adulthood.

To support the practice QoF strategy and management.

To respond to patients requiring on-the-day care and to help co-ordinate timely, effective multi-agency services to meet the individual needs of patients.

About us

Bassett Road Surgery is a well-established training practice in Leighton Buzzard, a pleasant market town of 53,000 on the Grand Union Canal in South Bedfordshire. We are one of three practices in the town, and have a growing list size of 20,350 and dispense to about 10% of our patients. The practice comprises seven partners and three salaried GPs working from purpose-built premises which have recently been extended and refurbished. We have minor illness nurses and complex needs matrons who work with our more vulnerable patients. In addition we have two clinical pharmacists and a full complement of practice nurses, HCAs, dispensers and phlebotomy staff.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The purpose of the role is to increase capacity to meet the demand for patients requesting appointments on the same day.

The post-holder will be part of the daily duty team comprising Clinical Supervisor, duty GP & Practice Matrons managing on-the-day minor illness cases in patients of all ages, small children through to late adulthood.

Appointments are at 12.5min intervals for treating, prescribing and referring as required.These patients will not be triaged prior to the appointment and will therefore represent the full range of problems presenting to primary care at short notice, not limited to Minor Illnesses.

To support and participate in the practice QoF strategy and management. To communicate effectively with duty colleagues, helping each other manage lists, minimising delays.

If possible, attend the daily lunchtime meetings to discuss cases, seek advice on care management and participate in group learning.

Deploy highly developed clinical skills with confidence, including phlebotomy and IM injections including Zoladex.

Deploy highly developed interpersonal skills with confidence.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered general nurse.
  • Independant Prescriber qualification.
  • Membership of professional body.
  • Post registration study in topics allied to general practice.
  • Ideally an interest in childs health, womens health and/or care of the
  • elderly.
  • Evidence of appropriate knowledge base.
  • Interest and basic knowledge in long-term conditions.
  • Understanding of NSFs, H&S and infection control.
  • Demonstrate an understanding and practical application of audit.
