Job summary

Role Overview

We are seeking an enthusiastic, experienced, and highly motivated Phlebotomist to join our friendly General Practice team on a part-time basis. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing an efficient and safe venepuncture service to our patient population, supporting the clinical team in the diagnosis and monitoring of various conditions.

Working Hours
  • Total Hours: 20 hours per week

  • Schedule: Over 4 mornings (e.g., Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday).

  • Specific hours/start and finish times to be agreed upon.

Main duties of the job

Key Duties and Responsibilities1. Clinical Practice

  • Perform venepuncture on patients of all ages, following established practice protocols and clinical guidelines, ensuring patient comfort and safety.

  • Accurately and efficiently collect, label, process, and store blood samples, ensuring correct tube types and transport requirements are met.

  • Check and verify patient identity and consent prior to every procedure.

  • Ensure the timely delivery or collection of samples by the relevant laboratory services.

  • Adhere strictly to all infection control policies, including the use of PPE, safe disposal of sharps, and maintaining a clean and tidy clinical environment.

  • Monitor patients post-procedure, recognising and appropriately managing any adverse reactions (e.g., fainting) and seeking immediate assistance from a clinician when necessary.

2. Administration and Stock Management
  • Accurately record patient details, tests requested, and collection information in the electronic patient record system (SystemOne).

  • Maintain and monitor stock levels of phlebotomy consumables and equipment, placing orders as required.

3. Communication and Teamwork
  • Communicate effectively and sensitively with patients, explaining procedures clearly and offering reassurance, especially to anxious individuals.

  • Liaise with GPs, Practice Nurses, and administrative staff regarding test requests, sample requirements, and patient queries.

  • Maintain strict patient confidentiality at all times in accordance with GDPR and practice policy.
